The Awards Committee is in its 3rd week of promoting OELMA Awards. Let’s recap what receiving an OELMA award means to some of our most recent award recipients:

Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month February 2026!

Congratulations! Karen Reiber, volunteer school library media specialist at Taft Elementary School (Cincinnati Public Schools), is the February Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month. Karen, although retired, is still actively bringing books and literacy to Cincinnati’s children and youth. The goal of the William Howard Taft Library - Book Access Project, “is to establish a student-centered library that teaches our student population how to use and love a library while promoting literacy.”

The program begins in September and ends in May. Each lesson is tied to a book or a genre, followed by a simple activity and then book checkouts. For example, in September, the students celebrated International Dot Day. She read “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds. Some grades did chalk-dot drawings outside; other grades did art with cut-out circles. The littles used dot markers and coffee filters to make their creations. One of the indicators of success is the increasing number of book checkouts year over year.

What are Karen’s tips for replicating this program? “Starting a library is a huge endeavor, yet I was approached earlier this year bey a group of parents who want to start a library in another Cincinnati school. Working on replicating this and making it sustainable is my hope, especially if I can find other certified librarians who also want to give back.”

Karen’s elevator pitch is “Every student deserves a school library - ensuring all students have fair access to diverse and relevant books. The goal is to level the playing field for this inner-city Cincinnati school.”

In her nomination, Karen acknowledged that this is an unusual application. Since her retirement in 2021, Karen has wanted to continue to give back to her community. She still holds an active license and continues to be a member of OELMA). Earlier in her career she taught in a more affluent school district and yet, here she finds herself in a most rewarding position - at an inner-city school building that had no library. Her church, that has been active with adopt-a-classroom for over twenty years in this school building, asked the principal what would she wish for - Ms. Jason said a library. Karen joined the church several months after it started the adopt-a-classroom endeavor and according to Karen “it has been awesome helping those with no library background create an awesome library space for kids.”

Karen volunteers on Wednesdays when she teaches kids how to use and love libraries through lessons and activities. Since the first year, checkouts are up and kids are now choosing a variety of books (not just graphic and illustrated novels). The building has no budget (the church helps where they can) and Karen works with Queen City Book Bank getting like-new books to fill the shelves.

The Queen City Book Bank was nominated and received the OELMA Literacy Leader Award and AASL Commendation in 2023.

READ On! Ohio! Award for Children & Teens

I’ve served on the OELMA Awards Committee for a long time, maybe ten years. Some people, not necessarily OELMA members, ask why are you still serving on the Awards Committee? Aren’t you tired? Yes, there are days and weeks when I wonder the very same thing. But I’ll tell you why, it’s the joy of it. Sure there is a lot of detail and time that goes into promoting awards, reading the awards packets, sending letters to the non-recipients and recipients, organizing the Awards Celebration. But I find joy, I find joy in working with a dedicated group of OELMA members; I find joy in reading the nominations; I find joy in talking with an array of public library staff, I find joy in celebrating with the recipients at the annual conference.

Awards brings joy! And here is a perfect example. A little over a month ago, President Gayle Schmuhl forwarded me an email from one of the 2025 READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens Award recipients. You may remember interacting with them as they arrived early so that they could attend the author session with Ellen Hopkins.

The email, which came through the OELMA website, asked the following:

Hello!

I was nominated for the read-on award and won. I am currently taking a college class that i have to write an essay about a major event in my academic life. I talked to Mrs. Amanda Brenner which is who nominated me was wondering if I could get a copy of her nomination. I would like to use it for her exact words for quotes. She said since it was a google form she cant get it herself.

Thank you!!!

What pure unadulterated joy I felt when I read it. A student, an enthusiastic reader, asked if they could get a copy of Ms. Brenner’s nomination to write an essay about a major event in their academic life for a college class. A READ On recipient believes that receiving this award qualifies as a major event. Wow, I called Liz Deskins, I cried…this, this is JOY!

50 Years Strong: Celebrate BIG by Honoring Excellence in Ohio School Libraries

OELMA celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Let’s celebrate B-I-G by nominating yourself or a colleague for an OELMA award. The nomination window opens February 16 and closes on March 23. In the meantime, be thinking of a colleague who you would like to nominate.

The Awards Committee, under the leadership of the Director of Communications, Melissa Wolf, is pleased to announce the following awards:

Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award honors the work of Professor Todd and recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and the school community through joint planning of a program, project, or event in support of the curriculum, using school library resources, and incorporating Ohio’s Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021).

Emerging Leader Award recognizes OELMA members who have recently assumed an OELMA leadership role for the first time. This Award honors members who demonstrate leadership potential and encourages members’ active participation in OELMA.

Tech Innovation Award recognizes OELMA members who design, develop, and implement innovative uses of technology in instruction. This award spotlights the importance of emerging technologies in supporting student learning.

Intellectual Freedom Award recognizes Ohio school librarians and/or other Ohio educators who demonstrate support for the American Library Association’s principles of intellectual freedom.

Leadership-in-Action Award recognizes Ohio school librarians pursuing active leadership roles in local schools, in OELMA, and in national professional organizations (e.g. AASL, ALA). This award honors OELMA members demonstrating an ongoing commitment to leadership in the school library profession.

Literacy Leader Award recognizes community organizations for exemplary support of literacy. This award honors groups supporting literacy, which reinforces student learning.

OELMA/Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award recognizes an Ohio licensed school librarian, who develops an exemplary school library program, collaborates with classroom teachers, implements technology-integrated instruction, and advocates for school libraries. The school librarian must have a minimum of three years of experience in that capacity.

OELMA-JLG Floyd Dickman Programming Grant honors the life and contributions of Floyd Dickman. In partnership with Junior Library Guild, this grant is awarded annually to one Ohio school library to help fund programs that inspire children to embrace the fun and the joy that reading offers. The grant continues the work that Floyd was so passionate about during his lifetime.

OELMA Service Award for School Administrators honors school administrator(s) whose leadership has made a significant contribution to the school library media program and services within their learning community.

Outstanding Contributor Award honors an Ohio licensed school librarian who has made outstanding contributions to school librarianship. The honoree has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the school library profession, while serving in OELMA leadership roles.

Scholarship Descriptions

J. Allen Oakum Scholarship is a $500 stipend awarded to an Ohio resident enrolled in an accredited school library program pursuing licensure in school library media. The scholarship is intended to help defray educational costs for future library media specialists as they complete their studies.

OELMA Founders Scholarship-This scholarship is up to a $1,000 stipend awarded to an Ohio resident enrolled in an accredited school library program pursuing licensure in school library media. The scholarship is intended to help defray educational costs for future library media specialists as they complete their studies.

Student Award Descriptions

READ ON, Ohio! Award for Children & Teens recognizes K-12 students who are enthusiastic readers and users of the school library. The student must be nominated by an Ohio school library media specialist or a public library staff member. Nominees must be enrolled in an Ohio K-12 school at the time of nomination.

OELMA Honors Frank Baker at Our 2025 Conference!

Congrats to Frank Baker!

The OELMA Presidential Award recipient is selected by the OELMA President with the support of the Board of Directors and honors the contributions of an individual to the school library field. This year, the recipient of the OELMA Presidential Award is Frank W. Baker, media consultant who has made it his mission to bring media literacy education to teachers and students for more than 25 years. For him that meant creating an internationally recognized website, writing books for educators, and conducting hundreds of hands-on interactive workshops. He believes that teaching critical thinking skills about media is more important than ever in a world where it seems everything on the internet is manipulated. He applauds the work of school library media specialists - who are constantly on the frontiers of teaching media literacy and fighting for students’ rights. Frank very much values his long relationship with OELMA: contributing to its conferences and posting on the listserv.

Thank you so much for this honor.
The late Jane Goodall in one of her last interviews talked about her MISSION. I can relate to that word. I’ve been on a mission.
She said: “what you do makes a difference”
As a missionary I wake up everyday asking myself: what more can I be doing; who have I not reached.

Today, It is me that should be honoring you! Why? Because you all are at the FRONTLINES, with students and teachers everyday
and have the knowledge and skills to teach media literacy. You make a difference.

With social media and algorithms spreading misinformation daily, it is more important than ever that WE redouble our media literacy efforts.

Finally, thank you OELMA for inviting me into your world.

Frank’s lifelong media literacy work was recognized by UNESCO's Global Alliance Partnership for Media & Information Literacy (GAPMIL) in 2019

For 10 years (2012-2022) he authored a blog about media literacy at Middleweb.com.

In November 2025, Frank was awarded the Elizabeth Thoman Service Award by the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) for his contributions to media literacy.

OELMA Awards Celebration 2025

The OELMA Awards Committee is pleased to announce the 2025 Awards Celebration and you are invited. This year, the Awards Celebration will be held over two days, Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15, during lunch.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday we will celebrate fifteen recipients for the following OELMA awards: Emerging Leader Award, Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award, Founders Scholarship, Intellectual Freedom Award, Literacy Leader Award, Outstanding Contributor Award, Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award, Service Award for School Administrators, and the Rosen Publishing School Librarian of the Month. The recipient of the Presidential Award will also be announced. The Presidential Award recipient is selected by the OELMA President and honors the contributions of the individual to the field. We look forward to that announcement.

On Saturday, November 15, from 11:15-12:15 we will celebrate our READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens Award recipients. In addition to celebrating our twelve recipients, we are highlighting the award’s tenth year. Sixty-seven students are now part of the READ On! Ohio circle of avid readers. Grace Hammond, this year’s recipient of the Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian of the Year Award, will give a 3-5 minute uplifting speech about school libraries on both Friday and Saturday.

The Award Celebration is one of the many highlights of the OELMA Conference. Each year the presentation provides an opportunity for us to honor our colleagues for their many contributions to the field and to celebrate our avid readers.

Rosen Round Table at Conference

The OELMA Annual Conference, “Read, Learn, Evolve” at OCLC is on November 13-15. Among the many excellent sessions is the Rosen Round Table, Saturday, November 15 at 1:15 p.m.

Join three Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarians of the Month for an engaging session during which each will share their project, program or lesson plan. Sheree Crandall (November 2024), Portsmouth West Middle School librarian will share her exciting program, Career Day at Portsmouth West Middle School. Kelly Silwani (February 2024), Olentangy Orange Middle School librarian, will share her lesson plan entitled “Truth or Faux.” Pam VanArsdale (September 2020), St. Francis DeSales High School librarian will share how she engages high school students in poetry through Poetry Outloud. Opportunities for questions will follow. A brief overview of the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month Award program will be conducted by facilitator Susan Yutzey, Past President, and Miriam Gilbert, Director of Rosen Online.

The Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month began in 2019 and since then thirty-six Ohio school librarians have received this distinguished award. OELMA accepts nominations throughout the year; however, awards are given September through May of each school year.

So how can you become a Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month? It’s as easy as 1,2,3.

Visit the OELMA website for the nomination form and guidelines before the 15th of each month
Determine which of your outstanding programs, projects or lesson plans you wish to highlight. Selection of the program, project or lesson plan is based on Ohio LIbrary Guidelines, outreach, advocacy, and best practices.
Complete the nomination form, upload a photo (png or jpg) of you and the project. Include additional support materials, if you wish. Click on submit and you are done!

This award spotlights the importance of both the school library community and librarian and the pivotal role each plays in transforming learning throughout students’ K-12 education.

Consider nominating yourself or another OELMA library media specialist to be considered for the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the month! You can nominate yourself or a colleague anytime. One recipient is selected by the 15th of each month (except June, July, August). Recipients receive a free set of books published by Rosen. OELMA has partnered with Rosen Publishing for this award since 2019 when Leslie Haynum, school library media specialist at Kimpton Middle School, received the award for a collaboration with the Stowe-Munroe Falls Public Library. From April 2019 until May 2025, we have honored thirty-six school librarians with the Rosen.

For the first time, the Awards Committee sponsored a Rosen Panel at the 2024 Annual Conference that featured Melissa Wolf (2022) and Angie Jameson (2020) who shared their Rosen projects and discussed the benefits, both personally and professionally, of being named a Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month. This year we are pleased to sponsor a Rosen Panel featuring Kelly Silwani, Sheree Crandall, and Pam VanArsdale. Stay tuned for more details.

We are pleased to partner with Rosen because since its establishment in 1950, Rosen has offered engaging print and digital books on a wide range of topics that are aligned with the curriculum. Rosen is also known for its databases and interactive e-books.

May Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month

Congratulations, Angela Husband, library media specialist at Cleveland Metro School District. Angela is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month for May.

The goal of the project “Book Creator Celebrating Young Authors” is to focus on two objectives: inquiry and creation. Learners engage with new knowledge by following a process that includes generating products that illustrate learning. Acquiring digital skills, students log in to Book Creator and learn how to use some of the tools and features within it to create multimedia content. The final product is the creation of an ebook.

The duration of the project is eight (8) weeks or 8 sessions at 45 minutes per class. The necessary supplies include the Book Creator App, Chrome book or other personal laptop. The project can be done across disciplines. As Angela explained in her application - “teachers can have the book assignment reflect their particular subject.”

The end product was an ebook that focused on a super hero theme that included a cover with title, author, and picture. In the story, students enrolled at Valley View Boys’ Leadership Academy had to share how they gained their superpowers and how they use them. The project was in collaboration with a fourth grade ELA teacher. After students learned the basics of Book Creator, they had the creative license to write and design the book as long as it included key story elements. Once the projects were completed, the books were published online and the class celebrated their accomplishment. Several copies were printed, signed, and given to younger students to read. As Angela shared “one student was excited and said his book sold out; another said he would buy me a car from his book sales. It was a joy to celebrate young authors.”

In her elevator pitch for “Book Creator Celebrating Young Authors,” Angela said “Looking for a fun way to get your students engaged in reading and writing? Here’s how Book Creator can help! Book Creator is designed to be used by everyone. With hundreds of accessibility features built right in, this tool will make your classroom an inclusive space. There are so many ways to collaborate with other teachers and opportunities for peer collaboration. It is truly magical to witness student creations come to life. The key to authentic learning is developing future-ready skills such as collaboration and communication. With the option to publish books online, students can share their books within the community and worldwide promoting literacy near and far. NOW LET’S CREATE AND CELEBRATE!

Summer Learning with OELMA!

Are you looking for summer PD that can be immediately applied to your school library? Are you looking for PD to renew your license? But it can’t be anything too taxing, after all, it is summer break. OELMA is pleased to offer a virtual book study using the book entitled, Using Literature to Support Children’s Mental Health edited by Kim Becnel and Robin A. Moeller. The class will meet virtually on Tuesday mornings between June 17th & July 8th with special guest authors throughout. The class will wrap up with a student project designed to be implemented into their school library. An optional final project round table will be held in early August for those wishing to share their project with the class and receive feedback.

The class is available for general information, for a 15 hour attendance certificate or one graduate credit through Ashland University. OELMA members as well as nonOELMA members are welcome to join the class. Sign up between now and June 16th on OELMA.org.

March Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month

Congratulations, Ellen Lewis, library media specialist at Chapman Elementary School, Strongsville City School District. Ellen is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month for March.

Ellen was nominated by Joan Battle, school library media specialist at Center and and Albion middle schools. Joan had this to say about the goals and learning objectives of the Sensory Book Collection at Chapman: “We wanted to address the needs of students with more intensive special needs in our building who would benefit from additional sensory interaction with literature; making books more accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful to them.” Furthermore, she stated “We wanted to provide books with a variety of tactile, auditory, and sensory feedback to our students.” The students can use the books during their weekly library story time, in their classrooms, and to check out so that they can share the books with their families.

Currently the collection includes sixty books that are heavily used and are so popular that Ellen and Joan are looking to create a similar collection at another elementary school that has students with tactile, auditory, and sensory needs. The collection was initially introduced during their weekly library story time and students were then able to check them out to take to their respective classrooms and homes.

Chapman Elementary partnered with the PTA and obtained a grant to purchase the books for the collection. In addition to the partnership, Ellen advertised the special collection and received donations from various school and community members.

We have created a “Sensory” book collection in our Chapman school library. These books are for our population who would benefit from additional sensory interaction with literature making books more accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful to them. The books have features such as textures, sounds, and buttons to manipulate. Our special needs population comes in once a week to spend time exploring the collection and can check out a book or two to enjoy with their families.

January Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month

Congratulations, Rachael Fryman, library media specialist at Edgewood Middle School, Edgewood City School District. Rachael is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month for January.

What is the goal of Kaleidoscope, the school literary and arts magazine? The goal of the literary and arts magazine is to give the Edgewood Middle School students an opportunity to experience publishing as well as inspiring them to continue to learn and grow in their art. Kaleidoscope’s focus for its first issue was themes in nature.

Throughout the year, the school library offered several contests around the theme of nature. The nineteen-member EMS Student Media Team as well as the EMS school staff selected the winners from each contest. The winners of each contest was then featured in the magazine. Students created bookmarks, stories, poems, and pieces of art. Digital copies of Kaleidoscope were emailed to students, shared through social media, newsletters, and the district website.

Why do you feel the program is a success? Fryman explained that students enjoyed the individual contests and the opportunities to excel. “It was especially wonderful to see students who otherwise might not join in school activities reach out and participate. Several students and adults reached out to share how they enjoyed being able to experience some of the best products from our students this year in a magazine format.” The link to the digital magazine created in Canva.

Is there any other information you would like to share? Students are excited to participate in this year’s digital magazine. The theme is “space.” The anticipated timeline for contests is:

Congratulations, Meggan (Megg) Aston, library media specialist at Davis Middle School Dublin City School District. Meggan is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month for December.

What is the goal of Digital Detectives? According to nominator, Brendan Erb, Digital Detectives is a three-day lesson in digital literacy in which the students create focused research questions, generate search terms to access information about their question, and identify authoritative sources from databases and the free internet.

Can you give us an overview of Digital Detectives? Brendan Erb elaborated on the lesson. “Students in a Digital Literacy class were getting ready to research an ‘essential question’ related to social media. In order to do the research well, Megg had the students become Digital Detectives. Everyone had a detective code name (which Megg used to refer to each student throughout the lessons) and spent three days going through lessons about databases, the open Internet, search terms and Boolean operators, and how to write an essential research question. By the end of the lesson, students had a far more complete understanding of the value of source authority and relevance of information in research.”

Why do you feel the program is a success? After the lessons, students spent the next week researching and becoming experts on the topic surrounding their essential question. They used the handouts and knowledge from their lessons with Megg to read and take notes on at least four sources - at least two from databases and two from the open internet, They used lateral reading for their open internet searches, which is also something that Megg discussed with them (Erb).

Is there any other information your would like to share? According to Erb, “the linked slides that were created in Canva, gives a sense of Megg’s humor that hooks kids and her masterful instructional planning in this unit.”

Congratulations Sheree Crandall, November Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month

Sheree is the library media specialist at Portsmouth West Middle School, Washington Nile Local School District.

What is the goal of Career Day at Portsmouth West Middle School?

The goal of the program, according to Sheree, “is to excite, educate, and inform our middle school students about the many different career opportunities available in our community and beyond. We believe that middle school is a foundation for learning how to become a successful young adult. We want to give our students every opportunity to find a career path that will help guide them into becoming productive, happy, and successful members of society. All career paths are vital to our community and so we invite any/all career types to participate.”

Can you give us an overview of Career Day at Portsmouth West Middle School?

According to Sheree, “Career Day is an all-encompassing program/event that the library provides each year to all students, grades 5-8. We have a wide range of career paths represented each year to educate, enrich, excite, and inform our students.” The program takes lots of planning. As Sheree explained, “I start by advertising the need for volunteers to share at Career Day on social media with specific times and dates for the event. I also speak with students and send letters home to let parents know that we would love to have them participate in our event if they would be willing to attend and share their career.” The set-up begins at 8:00 a.m. in the gymnasium. Each participant has a table and a student helper. The students are grouped by grade - the fifth and sixth graders attend the Career Day for two hours in the morning; the seventh and eighth graders attend the Career Day for two hours in the afternoon. Sheree prepares a list of appropriate questions and the students must select twenty-five from the list and record the answers to the questions as they engage with each participant.

Why do you feel the program is a success?

The program started in 2016 with a very small group of students and twenty tables. “Last year we had over sixty-five tables.” Sheree credits the growth of community participation in Career Day to social media. Another reason Sheree believes the program is successful is “that it allows students to learn and understand the education, finances, and overall workings of each career. This gives the student the understanding of what classes or pathways they will need to take when registering for high school classes. We have seen a significant increase in students going to the trade school, the military, and enrolling in the College Credit Plus program in our area over the past several years.”

Is there any other information your would like to share?

Sheree believes that it is “very important to educate our students on the many types of career opportunities available to them in the world today, especially in our community. The program planning starts early in the year and we ask community members, parents, businesses, colleges, trade schools, unions, etc. to volunteer their time for a whole day to bring their career knowledge to our students.”

Curiosity to Connection: How Library Festivals Inspire Lifelong Engagement

In an era where students are navigating an increasingly complex world, libraries offer something both simple and essential: a place to belong. Our high school library has been on a journey to become not just a repository of books and study halls, but a thriving community hub that supports every patron’s need for connection, creativity, and camaraderie. With this mission in mind, we have crafted a series of library festivals, each designed to create an inclusive, welcoming space where students and staff can come together to celebrate shared interests, explore new activities, and simply enjoy each other's company.

The secret to our festival success lies in a formula that has repeatedly proven to draw stakeholders in and keep them coming back. Each event is built around key elements that bring warmth, fun, and meaning to the library space:

Keep the Focus on Connection

After selecting a theme, we brainstorm ideas and ways to bring new students and staff into the library. We consider student artists who would draw their peers in with graphic marketing for events and involve them in the process. We print those designs on posters to hang around the school and press shirts with designs on them for students and staff to promote the event during the registration period. We also involve students and staff in the planning of these large-scale events to bring as many voices to the table as possible. Our principal has approved coverage so different staff members can attend these events and connect with students.

A Free Drink from Our School’s Coffee Shop

Offering a complimentary drink from Tiger Perk, our school coffee shop, has been a powerful way to make students feel welcome and special. Be it a fall-themed Candy Corn drink at Spooky Fest or a "chug jug" lemonade at Gamer Fest, offering a free beverage creates a cozy, community-centered vibe that invites students to relax and enjoy the space. Our latest festival registration demonstrated that 81% of attendees were most excited about enjoying Tiger Perk. When we promote festivals by word of mouth, mentioning this popular feature sparks interest and gets students eager to register.

Music from School Bands, Choirs, and Orchestras

Music brings energy and life to our festivals, transforming the library from a quiet study space to a vibrant venue where students can appreciate their peers’ talents. Including performances from school music groups not only showcases our students’ skills but also creates an atmosphere of celebration. Students and staff gather to enjoy live music, whether it’s a chilling Halloween set by the band or a Taylor Swift showcase performed by the Orchestra. Music becomes a shared experience that builds connections across grade levels and interests, making the library a space where everyone feels included.

Partnership with the Public Library

Collaboration with our local public library has enriched each festival by bringing additional resources and expertise that enhance our offerings. Through contributions like board games for Gamer Fest and a D&D campaign at Spooky Fest, our public library partners bring added variety and engagement to our events. This partnership also exposes students to the broader library community and reinforces the idea that libraries are lifelong resources. Our joint efforts make each event feel bigger, more meaningful, and part of something beyond the walls of our school. By building connections with public librarians, students are encouraged to see the public library as a welcoming resource they can access independently. We hope these relationships inspire students to explore library programs and events during weekends or evenings when our school library is closed.

Hands-On Crafts and Activities

Offering hands-on activities like pet rocks at Creative Fest, button-making at the Taylor Swift Festival, and mini-figure painting at Gamer Fest has proven to be one of the most effective ways to engage students. These interactive stations allow students to create something unique, express themselves, and take a little piece of the festival home with them. These activities encourage attendees to work together, share ideas, and support one another’s creativity, fostering an environment where they feel connected and valued. The craft stations are always abuzz with conversation and laughter—a sign that students and staff are finding joy and belonging in the space.

A Photo booth for Lasting Memories

Finally, we’ve discovered that a simple photo booth with themed props is one of the biggest draws for students. The chance to take photos with friends, dressed up in their favorite Taylor Swift era, in costume for Halloween, or with gaming props, creates a keepsake that students can cherish and share. The photo booth is more than just a fun activity; it’s a way for students and staff to capture moments with friends, feel seen, and celebrate their individuality.

Together, these elements have made our library festivals a success. By creating a welcoming, inclusive environment, we’re sending a clear message: the library is a place for everyone, a place where students and staff can be themselves, explore new interests, and form meaningful connections. With each festival, we’re not only celebrating our students’ diverse talents and passions but also building a stronger, more connected school community.

Successful Festivals

Taylor Swift Festival: Bridging Pop Culture and Library Magic

In December 2023, we embraced “Swiftie fever” with a Taylor Swift Festival that resonated with students in a big way. Students arrived dressed in their favorite Taylor “eras,” ready to pose with life-size cutouts and props in our photo booth. The event blended pop culture with creativity, allowing students to explore their personalities and interests in the library.

One hit element was our heat press station, where students brought items like sweatshirts and tote bags to personalize with Swift-inspired designs (we even added a few Travis Kelce themes). Button-making, a friendship bracelet station, and Taylor album-themed book pairings added even more ways for students to bond, craft, and explore the library’s offerings. Integrating popular music with library programs helped make the library a place students wanted to be. The high school orchestra club learned a Taylor Swift set and played a showcase during the event. The student coffee shop created a drink called “SwiftTEA” for all to enjoy.

Gamer Fest: Gaming and Connection for All

February’s 2024 Gamer Fest was our highest-attended festival yet, with students flocking to the library to game, create, and connect. The library became a mini gaming convention, with tabletop games provided by our local public library, a photo booth, and a DIY station for creating custom Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon cards. The day wasn’t limited to digital gaming; we made sure to include everything from consoles to board games, creating an inclusive event with something for everyone.

To personalize the experience, we offered a heat press station with student-designed logos (a big thank you to our student artists!). Students loved decorating their gear and receiving custom dice bags for their gaming essentials. Our Tiger Perk Coffee Shop even joined in with themed “chug jugs” for an extra boost of excitement. Collaborating with the public library helped broaden our offerings and served as a reminder that our libraries are stronger together.

Creative Fest: A Hands-On Art Extravaganza

April’s 2024 Creative Fest celebrated hands-on artistry, giving students a chance to dive into embroidery, tie-dye, and other creative crafts. We provided supplies for each station, where students customized shirts, bags, and more, offering a space for students to connect and have a creative outlet. Creative Fest showed how libraries can cater to diverse student interests while building a community of creators. The energy in the library that day was infectious, with students supporting each other and sharing their unique visions for the various offerings. The festival also gave students who may not see themselves as “traditional” library users a reason to visit, reinforcing our commitment to inclusivity.

Spooky Fest: Halloween Fun Meets Library Tradition

October’s 2024 Spooky Fest was a hauntingly fun way to bring the school together and celebrate Halloween. Students got into the spirit with a costume contest, photo booth, and a special “Spooky Showcase” from our talented band members. The atmosphere was full of excitement as students gathered to enjoy free candy-corn-flavored drinks from Tiger Perk and try out Halloween-inspired crafts. One of our favorite parts of Spooky Fest was our collaboration with the public library on a Halloween D&D one-shot, inspired by Five Nights at Freddy’s. This brought a unique, immersive experience to the day and attracted students who might not typically engage with library programming. The event was capped off by a visit from a professional makeup artist who works in the Career Tech program offered on our campus, giving students some extra theatrical flair for their costumes and a chance to meet a potential future teacher. Overall, Spooky Fest highlighted how seasonal events can allow libraries to celebrate culture and tradition while making the library feel like a natural gathering place.

Why Library Festivals? Building Community Through Connection and Creativity

Hosting these festivals has transformed our library into a true community hub. By creating a variety of themed events, we were able to connect with students who might not otherwise visit the library. These festivals allowed students to explore different aspects of themselves – whether through music, gaming, fashion, or creativity – and gave them a space to make friends, be themselves, and enjoy the library as a place of discovery.

As librarians, we know that fostering community is just as important as promoting literacy and other facets of the job. Through these festivals, we’ve created a safe and inclusive space where students and staff feel welcome, engaged, and inspired. We hope to keep evolving these events, staying in tune with our students’ interests, and building a library that truly reflects the diversity and creativity of our school.

If you’re considering giving a festival a go, I suggest you lean into what your students love and find small ways to make it a celebration of who they are. Include your students and staff in the planning and facilitation of your festivals. Plan as much ahead as you can and leverage local grants to fund your first few events. The icing on the cake is in the small details that make the events so special, and those require careful planning and collaboration.

Congratulations, Kathleen Oaster, school library media specialist at Tecumseh Middle School, TecumsehLocal School District. Kathleen is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month - October.

The Career Cafe’s goal is to introduce middle school students to career opportunities through the local Career Technology Center. Kathleen offers students an opportunity during their study halls to learn about a variety of career opportunities. The careers the students have learned about so far are: automotive, aviation, cosmetology, criminal justice, education, engineering, and medical dental. While participating the students in a fun activity. For example, during the month-long automotive program students built and raced lego race cars with the goal of building the fastest car. Superintendent Paula Crew praised the Career Cafe as “a unique opportunity for our students to explore a variety of career paths.” What makes this program even more exciting is that Kathleen and the middle school guidance counselor, Mrs. Skaggs, collaborated to bring the Career Cafe into being.

Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month Award 2024

The OELMA Annual Conference, Empowering the Future: Lifting Voices through the Library, is October 2-4 at OCLC. Among the many excellent sessions is the Rosen Round Table.

Join three Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarians of the Month for an engaging session during which each will share their project, program or lesson plan. Melissa Wolf, Bay MIddle School librarian will share her template for a makerspace that gives back. Kelly Silwani, Olentangy Orange Middle School librarian, will share her lesson plan entitled “Truth or Faux.” Angie Jameson, Chagrin Falls High School librarian will share her template for the new student book study that features New Kid by Jerry Craft. Opportunities for questions will follow. A brief overview of the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month Award program will be conducted by facilitator Susan Yutzey, Past President, and Miriam Gilbert, Director of Rosen Online.

The Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month began in 2019 and since then thirty Ohio school librarians have received this distinguished award. OELMA accepts nominations throughout the year; however, awards are given September through May of each school year.

So how can you become a Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month? It’s as easy as 1,2,3.

Determine which of your outstanding programs, projects or lesson plans you wish to highlight. Selection of the program, project or lesson plan is based on Ohio LIbrary Guidelines, outreach, advocacy, and best practices.

Congratulations Amy Masterson, March Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month!

“The LMC is the heart of the school and stays active throughout each and every day.”

Congratulations, Amy Masterson, school library media specialist at Fostoria Junior Senior High School, Fostoria City School District. Amy is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month - March.

Amy was nominated by Fostoria Junior Senior High School English teacher, Brad Bowser, “Ms. Masterson maintains a creative makerspace for student to use both for classes and during study halls. She allows these students to explore and create in their own space and challenge their perceptions of what is possible with the materials at hand. She also runs contests with the different implements.”

Amy shared that the “Makerspace is an ever-changing space in my library. I have been able to teach new skills to students with fun activities like perler beads, bead looms, pony bead key chains, book page projects and so much more. It's fun to watch other students teach others how to play chess and learn to strategize. Due to my space, I haven't been able to get huge equipment like 3D printers but I do have a Cricut machine and an Elson machine for the students to use. In addition, I utilize the makerspace to provide community service projects for students. Students have decorated mailboxes to be stuffed with items to send to the military and make cards for veterans and the elderly. In addition, community members present employment opportunities and colleges hold presentations for recruitment. The LMC is the heart of the school and stays very active throughout each and every day.”

OELMA is pleased to offer a virtual book study using the book entitled, Elevating the School Library: Building Positive Perceptions through Brand Behavior by Susan D. Ballard & Sara Kelly Johns. The class will meet virtually on Tuesday mornings between June 18th & July 9th with the authors joining us on July 2nd. The class will wrap up with a student project designed to be implemented into their school library. A final optional project round table will be held in early August for those wishing to share their project with the class and receive feedback.

The class is available for contact hours or one graduate credit through Ashland University. OELMA members as well as non-OELMA members are welcome to join the class. The OELMA Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award not only celebrates the life and contributions of Ross J. Todd to the library profession, but also the collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and their school communities through joint programs, projects, or events that support student learning and library resources. As stated in Ohio’s Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021), “Challenging, preparing and empowering learners is a community-wide effort. Partnerships represent the community supports needed to increase the likelihood of learner success.”

Ross J. Todd was a library and information science professor at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. During his life, he was recognized as an award-winning expert on the transformative role of school libraries. Dr. Todd co-authored “Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries, Part 1 and Part 2” with SC & I Distinguished Professor Emerita Carol Kuhlthau. In fact, Dr. Todd and Professor Kuhlthau received a “Certificate of Appreciation for Notable Service and Significant Service to Ohio’s School Libraries” in 2003 and 2004 from OELMA.

OELMA Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award recipients exemplify building and cultivating instructional and community partnerships to increase learner success. Their collaborative programs, projects, or events reflect best practices that can serve as a model for others in collaborative planning. Last year’s recipient Kristen Roope was recognized for the work she does with her colleagues for Genius Hour at their elementary school. Kristen stated, “The award brought attention to our dynamic library and the changing roles of the school library and librarian.” She continued to say that “not only was it a way to advocate and highlight the work we do, but it also allowed me to foster new or deeper connections with my school community.” Lifting our voices together can make wonderful things happen for our students, staff, and communities.

Let Your Leadership Voice Shine

The OELMA/Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award has been part of the OELMA awards tradition for eighteen years. Being nominated for the award signifies the respect that a colleague/colleagues have for the school librarian. The award honors a school librarian who has distinguished themselves through developing an exemplary school library program that incorporates the Ohio Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021) strands: equity, literacies, partnerships, and quality schools.

One of the most important trademarks, if you will, of the Outstanding School Librarian Award is its emphasis on leading beyond the library. What does leading beyond the school library mean? According to the Ohio Library Guidelines for Librarians, leading beyond the library incorporates the following:

1. Participate in setting the school district’s mission, vision and strategic plan for digital learning.

2. Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners.

3. Model and promote the use of personal and professional learning networks.

4. Encourage families and other members of the community to participate in school library activities.

5. Build and advocate strong relationships with stakeholders who recognize and support an effective school library.

6. Reinforce the role of the school library and librarian as informational and technological resources to maximize learning.

7. Participate in district, building and department or grade-level curriculum development and assessment on a regular basis.

8. Participate in state and national organizations.

9. Develop a library strategic plan that achieves a dynamic school library program and includes a mission, vision, measurable goals, operational management procedures, instructional strategies and an evaluation component.

The Awards Committee is not expecting the nominee to have ticked all the boxes because we all have lives outside the school library and our patrons. As you think about what leadership looks like; however, the verbs - participate, foster, model, encourage, build/advocate, reinforce, and develop - are all significant in the school library leadership lexicon. OELMA's Intellectual Freedom & LIteracy Leader Awards

According to the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, “the freedom to read is essential to our democracy.” In fact, the ALA created the Library Bill of Rights based on the First Amendment to guide librarians when serving their communities and protecting the rights of all patrons. The Bill of Rights states that library books and resources “should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves,” and these materials should present “all points of view on current and historical issues.” Finally, libraries are charged to “challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.”

This week, the Awards Committee is focusing on two awards that support intellectual freedom and the importance of literacy in our schools and communities: the Intellectual Freedom Award and the Literacy Leader Award.

The OELMA Intellectual Freedom Award recognizes Ohio school library media specialists and/or other Ohio educators who demonstrate support for the ALA’s principles of intellectual freedom. Award recipients exhibit a strong commitment to First Amendment values through the active promotion and defense of the Freedom to Read and ALA’s Principles of Intellectual Freedom.

Our 2023 Intellectual Freedom Award winner was Hannah Green, a library media specialist at Whetstone High School (Columbus City Schools). When her district asked the school librarians to not distribute the diverse collection books, Hannah started a letter writing campaign, arranged a meeting with the acting Superintendent, created a power point presentation, and persisted with the other CCS librarians until their voices were heard. Hannah became the face of this censorship battle but strongly stated that she could not have done it without her many colleagues. Through the efforts of Hannah and her colleagues, the books were released to be placed on the library shelves so students could access them. Hannah’s words of wisdom for us as censorship continues to be an issue many of us fear facing are, "Just remember there is great strength in numbers. You are not alone in this fight!”

Next, the OELMA Literacy Leader Award is unique because it recognizes community organizations for exemplary support of literacy that reinforces student learning. Recipients of this award are also recommended for an AASL Commendation by OELMA. Recipients of this award demonstrate a strong, ongoing commitment to developing literacy through educational programming and/or grassroots literacy program implementation.

Last year’s award recipients included the As Told By Foundation, Green Schools Foundation, and Queen City Book Bank. The As Told By Foundation and Queen City Book Bank also received an AASL Commendation.

Congratulations Kelly Silwani, February Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month!

Congratulations, Kelly Silwani, school library media specialist at Olentangy Orange Middle School, Olentangy Local School District. Kelly is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month - February.

Kelly’s lesson entitled “Truth or Faux.” As she explains it, 7th and 8th grade students, using “close reading” had to evaluate photos and determine if they were real or fake or AI. The goal of the lesson is for students to evaluate and corroborate media sources for credibility and accuracy using close reading. Students evaluated fifteen (15) images and used close reading (evaluating critically) to determine if an image was fake (fauxtography) or real. They also evaluated real vs AI images. Let's Hear it for our OELMA Scholarship Grant Awards!

This week, the Awards Committee brings you our scholarship and grant awards with the Founders Scholarship, J. Allen Oakum Scholarship, and OELMA/JLG Floyd Dickman Programming Grant.

Here’s the scoop on the OELMA/JLG Floyd Dickman Programming Grant. In 2018, Junior Library Guild (JLG) and OELMA partnered to bring the grant into being. The grant honors the life and contributions of Floyd Dickman, a Library Consultant at the State Library of Ohio who retired in 1999 and was recognized, up until his death in 2015, for his leadership, commitment, and passion for children’s literature and family literacy. The purpose of the programming grant is to fund programs that inspire children and youth to embrace the joy of reading. The grant continues the work that Floyd was passionate about during his lifetime.

In 2023, Erica Mackley, Experiential Learning Specialist at Granville Intermediate School, received the OELMA/JLG Floyd Dickman Programming Grant to seed a collection of Spanish books for the school library. Here is what Erica had to say about the importance of receiving the grant for GIS: “I loved the opportunity to partner with one of our related arts teachers (Spanish) for the JLG programming grant. Teaming with ELA is obviously an easy fit when it comes to our jobs, but this was a perfect opportunity to remind our whole staff that there are so many ways we can work together across the curriculum.”

OELMA offers two scholarships for post graduates to pursue careers as school librarians - the J. Allen Oakum Scholarship and the Founders Scholarship. Here is what to know about these two scholarship opportunities. The Oakum Scholarship is awarded to an Ohio resident enrolled in an accredited library school program, who is pursuing licensure in school/library media. This scholarship is intended to help defray educational costs for future library media specialists as they complete their studies. The scholarship was established in 1985 through the philanthropy of the late J. Allen Oakum, an OELMA Past President. The Founders Scholarship honors OELMA founders and co-presidents (1977) Maxie J. Lambright and Isabelle Pratt for their commitment to the field of school librarianship. It is awarded to an Ohio resident enrolled in an accredited library school program, who is pursuing licensure in school library/media. This scholarship is intended to help defray educational costs for future library media specialists as they complete their studies.

In 2023, June Lucal was one of two recipients of the Founders Scholarship. Here is what June said about receiving the Founders Scholarship at this pivotal time. “I just wanted to thank you again for the OELMA Founders Scholarship I received last year! It was the first scholarship I had received since my undergrad years, and for many reasons, I was incredibly happy to be chosen. The process of applying, receiving, and accepting this award taught me a great deal about OELMA and school librarianship in Ohio, too. I attended the luncheon and awards ceremony in October 2023 in Dublin, OH, and found it quite enlightening to hear what other people are doing in this field. I truly appreciate that the OELMA scholarship committee saw the potential in me, and I hope to get more involved with this group in the future.”

Lift Your Leader Voice - Nominate an OELMA Member for an Award

Carol A. Brey-Casiano, Director of Libraries, El Paso Public Library, outlined ten steps to being a great library leader in her article entitled “Leadership Qualities for Future Library Leaders.”

Step #1: Find a Good Mentor/BE a Good Mentor

“We all want someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). My mentor, almost 30 years ago, was Kari Inglis, school librarian at Bishop Watterson High School (Columbus). For 2023 award recipient, Amy Keister, she looks to OELMA members as her role models. Amanda Brasfield, 2021 recipient of the OELMA Emerging Leader Award, says receiving the award was a jolt of inspiration. OELMA has connected me with many fantastic school librarians around Ohio and I am made better each day through their willingness to share and participate in our community.” Do you have a mentor? Are you a good mentor to other school librarians?

Step #2: Learn How to Follow First

Sometimes you have to know how to follow the lead of others if you are to succeed. In the midst of renovating the school library, I often followed the lead of the students. Yes, I’d taken any number of library management classes and had my own thoughts about redesigning the learning center, but it was in listening to the students’ voices - that’s where I got the best ideas.

Step #3: Be Visionary

Can you articulate a vision for your school library and then motivate others to share and accomplish that vision? The most valuable lesson I learned during my twelve years at the suburban high school from which I retired, was collaborating on a strategic plan for the district’s school libraries. Deb Logan provided the professional development and our district’s school librarians engaged parents, community members, academic librarians, and administrators in a year-long strategic planning process. All voices were heard and we, as a team, “built bridges to what matters (theme)”

Step #4: Be a Good Servant

Being a leader is a humbling experience. As Brey-Castano states: “You learn that while the buck may stop with you, it takes the work of every team member to be successful.” Always say “Thank you.” Who do you thank in your building, in your district?

Step #5: Take Risks

Sound scary? It can be, but if you have a rationale for the decision, then others will listen. School librarians are great at providing substantive rationales - think… what do we do when we purchase books for our collection?

Step #6: Take Care of Yourself

Being a leader takes stamina. Even if you don’t think you have time, exercise, rest, hydrate, etc. What do you do to take care of yourself?

Step #7: Maintain a Positive Attitude

Of the ten steps, this is the most difficult. As a school librarian, who can we deliver hope to on any given day? A student who needs a particular book? A teacher who needs help creating a research project? An administrator who just needs a sounding board?

Step #8: Never Turn Down a Leadership Position

Yes, even if it’s to coordinate a building or district activity/event. You have an opportunity to network AND learn about the inner workings of the building, the district, the association. These experiences will be helpful as you consider taking on more leadership positions/roles.

Step #9: Learn How to Motivate People Effectively

It’s easy for us to just say, “Oh never mind, I’ll just do it myself.” As Brey-Casiano says, “A truly great leader has to trust the people they are leading to do their best.” How do you motivate your staff, your volunteers, your students to be the best they can be?

Step #10: Keep Your Sense of Humor

Brey-Casiano suggests keeping things in your office that make you laugh. I had a desk drawer filled with stress balls and I had a colleague, Laura, whose quick wit made me laugh until my sides ached.

Leadership is ultimately about caring about the people around you - your students, your school community, your teachers, your administrators - and demonstrating that care.

What Does Receiving an OELMA Award Mean?

Nominating yourself for an award or asking a colleague to nominate you can feel like a “bit of an odd social conundrum where we are faced with the awkward thought of whether it’s ok for us to promote ourselves, when we (or at least I) try and maintain a balance between humility and confidence in what we do (Cynthia Leung)."

The theme of the 2024 annual conference is Lift Your Voice in the Library. Nominating yourself or a colleague for an OELMA award is lifting your voice, lifting your voice to lead your library.

Leung cites four reasons why you should nominate yourself:

You know yourself and your accomplishments better than anyone else.
Leaving it to others to make the connection on how much you fit an award leaves the outcome of opportunity outside of your control.
Nominating yourself doesn’t mean you will win, but it does give you the fighting chance.
Nominating yourself puts you on other people’s radars and is great for networking.

Here is what Angie Jameson, recipient of the 2023 OELMA Tech Innovation Award, says about receiving her award:

“The Technology Innovation Award brought attention to the behind-the-scenes work I do. When the press release went out, I received warm notes of celebration from board members and some community members. As our district started down the path of how generative AI will impact our school, the recent award gave me the confidence to lead conversations about technology and innovation with stakeholders and decision-makers regarding this critical pivot in the information landscape.”

Amy Keister shares what receiving the OELMA Emerging Leader Award has meant to her as a professional:

“It was such an honor to be nominated for the Emerging Leader Award because it came from a colleague. I have always looked to OELMA members as my role models to learn and grow as a school librarian, and to know that an OELMA member saw me in that role meant the world to me. It also made my role in our district more visible to the community and the positive reaction from our community was heartwarming. So, please nominate someone you know or yourself! It's an amazing opportunity to be recognized and shine!”

Read On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens Nominations Open!

The Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) is pleased to announce its READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens is open to nominations from Ohio school library media specialists and public library staff beginning February 5, 2024.

Created in 2015, The READ On! Ohio Award recognizes Ohio K-12 students who are enthusiastic readers and enjoy being in the school and/or public library using the many services available. The student must be enrolled in an Ohio K-12 school at the time of nomination.

The READ On! Ohio Award recipient will be selected from applicants and nominees who meet at least two of the following criteria:

Demonstrates an enthusiasm for reading
Exhibits an enthusiasm for sharing books with others
Uses books for a variety of purposes
Reads independently on a voluntary basis
Uses the school and/or public library frequently

Recipients are selected by the OELMA Awards Committee. Up to sixteen recipients are selected according to grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and region (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest). See the list of READ On! Counties by region.

The recipients each receive a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card and commemorative certificate during the OELMA Annual Conference. Each recipient’s name will be announced through the OELMA listserv, website and social media. In addition, each recipient’s school's public information officer will be notified through a press release.

To nominate a student, complete and upload the OELMA READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens application form which requires a 250-word rationale that speaks to how the student meets at least two of the following criteria: 1) demonstrates an enthusiasm for reading; 2) exhibits an enthusiasm for sharing books with others; 3) uses books for a variety of purposes; 4) reads independently on a voluntary basis; 5) uses the school and/or public library frequently. Nominations are due by 11:59 p.m. April 1, 2024.

The nominator of each winning nominee will be notified by email about their nominee’s selection for the award. The nominator is expected to contact the winning nominee with the award selection results.

Congratulations Terry Clutter, January Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month!

Congratulations, Terry Clutter, school library media specialist at Stanton Middle School, Kent City School District. Terry is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month - January.

Terry’s project, All School Reads Day at Stanton Middle School, during which students trade in their normal curriculum for fun and interactive reading activities is part of a district-wide reading program entitled Rough Riders Read. One School, One Book, One Day! This year they read Wildfire by Rodman Philbrick. Terry leads a schoolwide committee on selecting a book and preparing fun and enriching activities to accompany the test throughout the day. The Kent Fire Department attended and gave two presentations to the students about fire, fire safety, and firefighters.

The purpose of the One School, One Book, One Day activity is to have a shared literacy experience among the entire school community, to encourage discussion and critical thinking, build empathy and perspective, build community, and foster a love of reading.

The program was a success. This was determined by the responses from the staff and student survey. Students like to be involved in determining the novel and planning activities. This has led Terry to include students on the advisory panel.

December Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month

Congratulations Rachael Fryman, December Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month!

Congratulations, Rachael Fryman, school library media specialist at Edgewood Middle School, Edgewood City Schools (Trenton). Rachael is the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month - December.

Rachael’s project is a student and staff “Readerboard.” Students and staff can earn points by reviewing books, completing reading logs (20 minutes a day), completing reading Quests (40 Book Quest, Alan Gratz Quest, Amulet Quest, etc.), and participating in other activities held in the library (NaNoWrimo for November). The top 10 students and top teachers get various privileges and prizes throughout the quarter such as first pick of new books, special, invitations to events (upcoming: Library Bingo in December), free books, and student’s favorite: candy.

The goal with the Readerboard was to increase library usage and engagement among students and staff members. Rachael hoped to see increased checkout numbers, more conversations about books between students and also between students and staff members, and she wanted to share student successes in reading and writing.

By the end of November, circulation numbers doubled from the previous year. Edgewood Middle School’s library walls are covered with book reviews from staff and students which has also helped readers find new books to try out themselves. The literacy committee at EMS has added the Readerboard program to the list of official activities that our school would like to continue to do to support literacy building with students.

Assistant Principal Josh Stapleton enjoys the reviews hanging up around the space and the growth of activity in the library from individual student and classroom visits. “Anecdotally,” says Rachael, “I’ve seen a huge growth with students wanting to discuss books with me and other staff members, wanting to recommend books to their classmates and teachers, and students sharing their creativity with me to display in the library.”

Congratulations, Kate Darnell upon receiving the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month Award for September 2023. Kate is the library media specialist at Madison Comprehensive High School, Mansfield.

Kate received the award for her project to diversify and modernize the school library at Madison. “For over a year,” Kate explained in her application, we have been working on modernizing and diversifying the MCHS Library. When I started at this school last year, I submitted our collection for an analysis on Titlewave. Our collection had an average age of 1998 and 68% of the items were considered "aged" and only 23% of our items were considered to be diverse. I applied for and received a grant from the Snapdragon Foundation for $5990.75 for new, diverse books.”

“In addition,” Kate described, “We have been working on genre-fying the library. We spent all of last year labeling books with a sticker to identify their main genre. Since school started in August, we have been scanning books into the computer to update their records, as well as rearranging the items on the shelves. As classes have filtered through for library orientation, they have been so excited with the change! They are able to find books much easier, and they are excited to see current, relevant books with characters that they can relate to. We are in the final stages of genre-fying the library. The library is collaborating with some of the art classes to create signs to hang in the new genre sections.”

In her response to hearing about the award, Kate responded “WOW! Thanks!!!! I reached out to Miriam, too :) I am SUPER excited for the box of books. We didn't pass our levy in May, and money is very very tight. The box of books is amazing as a prize :)”

Jasmine will be the keynote speaker on Thursday October 5. In addition, Jasmine will have a regular session where she will be on a panel with an Ohio author.

Jasmine Warga’s provided bio:

Jasmine Warga is the New York Times-bestselling author of middle grade novels Other Words For Home, The Shape of Thunder, and A Rover’s Story. Other Words For Home earned multiple awards, including a John Newbery Honor, a Walter Honor for Young Readers, and a Charlotte Huck Honor. The Shape of Thunder was a School Library Journal and Bank Street best book of the year, a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Children's and YA Book Award, and has been named to several state award reading lists. A Rover’s Story, her latest novel, was an instant New York Times bestseller, a Indie Next List and a Junior Library Guild selection, and was named a best book of the year by Publishers Weekly and The Washington Post. She is also the author of young adult novel, My Heart and Other Black Holes, which has been translated into over twenty different languages. Jasmine currently teaches in the MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Originally from Cincinnati, she now lives in the Chicago-area with her family in a house filled with books.

Just how does OELMA have your back? Since 1976, OELMA has served its members through:

This year there are four positions open on the OELMA Board: Vice President, Treasurer, Director of Membership, and Director of Advocacy. OELMA runs on volunteers and so we are asking you to consider nominating yourself for one of the open positions.

“The OELMA Vice President serves two consecutive years,” explains current VP, Lisa Barnes Prince. “The Vice President’s duties include collaborating with the Conference chair and the Director of Teaching & Learning to plan the yearly conference. Other duties include collaborating on mutual promotion through communication and helping expand the value of an OELMA membership.” From her perspective, Lisa states, “I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as Vice President and Treasurer for OELMA. Dr. Jessica Dennison explains why she likes her position as Director of Membership, “As the the Director of Membership I get to make so many new connections across the state by talking to members across the state to see what members need. Being a voice for the members and getting to see supports put in place for members has been incredible during my two year appointment. I also have had the opportunity to grow my leadership skills and fulfill goals that are part of my district evaluation.”

As Director of Membership, Jessica answers member emails. “Typically,” she states, “my time spent on my board seat is just a few hours a month. I attend board meetings (virtual) once a month and then have occasional committee meetings. This has been incredibly helpful given my busy family life! In the last spring, I am responsible for gathering the names of nominees for open board seats. I am in charge of the nominations and regional representation committees. I also write a quarterly newsletter article, volunteer for blog posts, and prepare a monthly board reports for board meetings.”

Karen Gedeon, after serving as OELMA President, ran for the newly created position of Director of Advocacy. Karen highlights some the duties of the director:

Oversees the Advocacy Committee
Represents the committee on the board
Represents OELMA outside of the school library community.

“We have a wonderful group of effective team members who are currently working on several projects and the director will follow-up to ensure their completion.” Karen further explains, “The new Director of Advocacy will also be charged with tasks assigned in the strategic plan when that is updated later this year.”

The Advocacy Committee meets about once a month and the board meets about ten times a year. Most if not all meetings are virtual and usually last an hour to an hour and a half.

“I have grown both personally and professionally in ways I could never have imagined by serving on the OELMA board. I have learned how to work with others to make positive change and I have learned things about myself by doing things I never thought I was capable of. Being a board member is not something you do alone. It is something you do as a team and school librarians make the best team members because we know the importance of working with others. Please join our leadership team. The benefits your reap from it will be so much more than the work you put in.”

May's Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month Award

Congratulations, Heidi Fletcher upon receiving the Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month Award for May 2023. Heidi is the library media specialist at Madison-Plains High School, London.

Heidi received the award for her collaborative project with Matt Long who is a technology teacher. The Technology Ethics Research project is a 6-week long research project for an 8thgrade technology class. The project is centered around technology ethics (ex: Online Gaming, Social media, Online Mental Abuse). The project begins with learning how to pick a topic and how to do pre-research through how to present a Google Slideshow.

The goal is to teach students the ethical uses of technology and teaching research techniques, tips and tricks, along with properly citing their source and critically evaluate a variety of points of view (INFOhio) sources of online information. Students learn about unseen impacts that technology has on individuals. This is also an introduction to proper research and citations, in order to prepare students for high school and beyond.

The Rosen Publishing Ohio School Librarian of the Month recognizes one school librarian a month who designs, develops, and implements a collaborative lesson plan and/or programming that empowers student learning. This award spotlights the importance of both the school library community and librarian and the pivotal role each plays in transforming learning throughout students’ K-12 education.

Souvenirs are defined as “a usually small and relatively inexpensive given, kept or purchased as a reminder of a place visited, an occasion, etc.

The OELMA awards, like souvenirs, come in many shapes and sizes. There are engraved plaques, engraved trophies, framed certificates, and certificates. More than the physical tributes, the awards are reminders of an occasion in which the recipient is honored for what they have achieved in their profession. As Angela Wojtecki states “An OELMA award is truly special because it is a testament that the work you do on a daily basis is being seen by others in the field. It is empowering and a very special honor to receive an OELMA award as a school librarian and educator. An OELMA award means that you are recognized by your colleagues who know the “dedication and effort we put into the work we do in our libraries.”

Receiving the OELMA Intellectual Freedom Award was incredibly important to Kristin Dages “because it recognizes the critical role that school libraries and librarians play in ensuring that diverse viewpoints and ideas are accessible to all of our students. In a time where there is increasing pressure to censor or limit access to information, winning this award signifies a commitment to upholding the principles of intellectual freedom and providing safe and welcoming space for our students and staff to explore and engage with ideas.This award not only celebrates the important work that we do as librarians but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to protect our students’ access to diverse collections and promote free expression in our communities.”

For Kate Loker, recipient of the 2022 Tech Innovation Award, it propelled her professionally into more opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and to share her passions for literacy and technology in her school community. Leading beyond the school library into the community, Lori Pringle’s leadership in bringing media literacy awareness and professional development to educators, school library media specialists, and students will have a long lasting impact.

The Suite Spot of Professional Recognition: Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award

Ready for Spring Break? Warmer Temperatures? It’s just around the corner. But before you go to your destination’s Suite Spot, don’t forget to nominate a colleague for the Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award.

This OELMA Award honors the life and work of Dr. Todd, a professor of library and information science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, who was recognized up until his death in 2022, as an award-winning expert on the transformative role of school libraries. The award recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and the school community through joint planning of a program, project, or event in support of the curriculum, using school library resources, and incorporating Ohio’s Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021).

So, make sure you nominate a colleague for that Suite Spot of Professional Recognition before relaxing on Spring Break!

What a Delightful Surprise!

Dictionaries and encyclopedias and the hot new checkout items in my libraries. Really, I’m not kidding.

Several years ago I dismantled my reference collections (I serve two middle schools). The survivors – an encyclopedia set and some dictionaries – were moved to nonfiction instead. My thought was they would probably never actually be checked out, but students still need to learn the skills that come with using physical reference books so I hung on to them.

Fast forward to now, March of 2023. So far this year, I have had multiple encyclopedia volumes checked out. Their circulation has been steadily increasing each year. One volume was (unfortunately) so loved that it came back covered in gum. I’m currently debating its future – the set is from 2009!

But more surprising still are the dictionary checkouts. Sometimes two go out at a time, to different kids from different classes, and the Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary– yes, the 5-inch thick one – is by far the most popular. The English Language Arts teachers just shake their heads in disbelief.

At first we thought it was the novelty of checking out the biggest book in the collection, but that’s not quite it. It’s a print book – a physical, tangible object instead of a search box. Kids are starting to appreciate the ability to flip between pages, easily go to exactly where they want to be and see how small pieces of information compile into a larger unit.

What we used on a daily basis back in the day had fallen out of fashion, but now it’s making a real comeback. To tell the truth – I’m just happy that the kids are always so excited to check them out.

Daylight Saving Time has begun which can only mean one thing. Not only is Spring Break almost here but the end of the Awards Season is coming to an end soon. So, OELMA members, before you enjoy those extra hours of sunshine and a well-deserved vacation, let’s check the professional recognition awards criteria and get all the application materials packed and submitted by March 22nd. Consider these opportunities for professional recognition: the OELMA/Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award and the OELMA Service Award for School Administrators.

The OELMA/Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award recognizes a licensed Ohio school library media specialist who has developed an exemplary school library program. An outstanding school librarian incorporates all four strands of the Ohio Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021) throughout their daily practice. Follett School Solutions, Inc. sponsors this award by providing $150 in Follett resources and OELMA provides a commemorative plaque to the recipient during the OELMA annual conference.

The OELMA Service Award for School Administrators honors school administrators whose leadership has made a significant impact to the school library media program and services within their learning community. This award can have multiple recipients and is an excellent opportunity to acknowledge a supportive administrator.

The OELMA/JLG Floyd Dickman Programming Grant, The OELMA J. Allen Oakum Scholarship, and The OELMA Founders Scholarship

Sharing the joy of reading with our students is one of the many great highlights of being a school media specialist/librarian! The OELMA/JLG Floyd Dickman Programming Grant honors an OELMA member who is a licensed Ohio school library media specialist who exhibits evidence of a school library program or activity that supports reading among children and/or youth and has provided a letter of support from a school administrator. JLG will collaborate with the recipient to select $250 in award-winning books that meet the goal of the grant.

Additionally, OELMA offers two distinct scholarships - The OELMA J. Allen Oakum Scholarship and the OELMA Founders Scholarship. Those who have the opportunity to apply for the scholarships would be an Ohio resident enrolled in an accredited library school program who is pursuing licensure in school library/media. These scholarships are intended to help defray educational costs for future library media specialists as they complete their studies. The OELMA J. Allen Oakum Scholarship recipient receives a $500 stipend and the OELMA Founders Scholarship recipient receives up to a $1000 stipend.

Don’t miss the boat! Nominate a school librarian for an OELMA award. Today’s announcement focuses on three awards - the OELMA Emerging Leader Award, the OELMA Tech Innovation Award, and the OELMA Leadership-in-Action Award. Professional recognition in your field is more important than ever because it gives you credibility which helps build trust with the people that you work with in your building, your district, your community.

Lori Pringle received the 2022 Emerging Leader Award. Here is what she shared:

“It was an honor to be a 2022 recipient of the Emerging Leadership Award. “I am grateful to be recognized for leading beyond the library to positively impact student achievement through classroom collaboration, professional development, and media literacy awareness. It is exciting to see Ohio educators and library media specialists striving to achieve PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification as a result of my leadership.”

The OELMA Emerging Leader Award recognizes members who have recently assumed an OELMA leadership role for the first time. The Emerging Leader Award honors members who demonstrate leadership potential and encourages members to actively participate in the Association.

Multiple recipients may receive the OELMA Emerging Leader Award. The applicant must be a current OELMA member and effectively fulfill an OELMA leadership role for the first time within the last five years. Have you served as a member or chairperson of an OELMA committee or know an OELMA member who has? Then nominate yourself or a colleague between now and March 22, 2023.

The OELMA Tech Innovation Award honors a licensed school library media specialist who uses technology as a tool for learning and collaborates to promote the integration of technology throughout the curriculum. The applicant must be a current OELMA member who practices a commitment to the implementation of innovative uses for technology in the classroom or professional development. Have you designed an innovative lesson or PD that integrates technology or know an OELMA member who has? Then don’t miss the boat, nominate yourself or a colleague between now and March 22, 2023.

The OELMA Leadership-in-Action Award recognizes an Ohio school library media specialist who pursues active leadership roles in their school district, in OELMA, in a national professional organization such as ALA, AASL. The applicant must be an OELMA member for the previous three years and have successfully completed at least one Association leadership role and be currently serving in a leadership role in their school district, on an OELMA committee, and/or in a national professional organization. Are you committed to leadership in the school library profession or know an OELMA member who is? Then hop on board and nominate yourself or a colleague now!

READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens is now open for nominations!

Dear Ohio School Librarians:

OELMA is pleased to announce that the READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens is now open for nominations. The READ On! Is a special award because it honors K-12 students who are enthusiastic readers and enjoy being in the school library and/or the public library using its many services.

Do you know of a student who visits the school library and exhibits two of the following?

· Demonstrates an enthusiasm for reading

· Exhibits an enthusiasm for sharing books with others

· Uses books for a variety of purposes

· Reads independently on a voluntary basis

· Uses the school and/or public library frequently

Then nominate them using theREAD On! Ohio application form found on the OELMA website by March 22, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Each nominator is asked to write a 250-word rationale that speaks to at least two of the following criteria: 1) demonstrates an enthusiasm for reading; 2) exhibits an enthusiasm of sharing books with others; 3) uses books for a variety of purposes; 4) reads independently on a voluntary basis; 5) uses the school library and/or public library frequently.

The OELMA Awards Committee will select up to sixteen recipients, according to grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and region (Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, and Southeast). A break down of counties may be found in theOELMA READ On! Ohio Award description. Recipients of the award each receive a $25 gift card from Barnes & Noble, a commemorative certificate, and is invited to the OELMA Annual Conference Award celebration in early October.

We have included a flyer, press release, and graphics that you can post OR feel free to make your own to promote the award to your school community. Since the READ On! Ohio Award is now open for nomination by public library staff, please reach out to your public library to promote the award. If you scan the list and don’t see the OELMA Collaborative School Library Award, it’s because the award has been renamed - Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award. The award honors the life and work of Dr. Todd, a professor of library and information science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, who was recognized, up until his death in 2022, as an award-winning expert on the transformative role of school libraries. Todd and his co-author, Professor Carol Kulthau, conducted a leading-edge study, “Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries,” in the early 2000s and received a Certificate of Appreciation for Notable Service and Significant Service to Ohio’s School Libraries from OELMA. The award recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and the school community through joint planning of a program, project, or event in support of the curriculum, using school library resources, and incorporating Ohio’s Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021).

The Awards Committee now reports to Amanda Brasfield, Director of Communications. We are pleased to announce this year’s Awards Committee members: Casaundra Bronner, Gayle Brusk, Heidi Fletcher, Lisa Gallagher, Cheryl Lorson, and Susan Yutzey.

Awards season is open until March 22, 2023. Please check out the awards pages and nominate yourself or a colleague. As Angela Wojtecki, 2022 OELMA Outstanding Contributor Award recipient, remarked recently “An OELMA Award is truly special because it is a testament that the work you do on a daily basis is being seen by others in the field. It is empowering and a very special honor to receive an OELMA award as a school librarian and educator."

Packing for Conference? Quick Ideas for What Should Make the Cut

Less than a week until conference begins! Are you ready?

Whether you're a first timer or well-seasoned attendee, here are some conference-specific packing ideas as you prepare next week:

Layers

Moving from session to session can mean moving between fluctuating thermostats, plus you know, October in Ohio. If you'd like to cover bases no matter what temperature the environment might be, plan to bring and wear layers. Jean jackets and comfortable cardigans--*with pockets*--are almost always my layers of choice.

Comfortable shoes

Whatever shoes you find most comfortable for walking and being on your feet, pack 'em. Leave any brand-new shoes at home for breaking in another time. I'd bring two pairs and give yourself flexibility if you need to switch for whatever reason--I'm bringing my fave Chelsea boots and slip-on Toms since I live in them already.

Laptop / Macbook / Chromebook

Phones are obviously convenient, but nothing beats the larger screen for viewing session presentations and shared docs, checking email in between sessions, and maybe even already incorporating fresh new ideas and resources into upcoming plans and activities back home, if you're a multitasker.

Chargers (Phone & Laptop / Macbook / Chromebook)

Don't forget to pack your phone and laptop chargers (and freshly charge the computer before you go!). You also might want to bring a fully charged power bank, too, if your phone battery tends to drain more quickly away from home. Remember to put your laptop charger into your daily conference bag, in case you need to charge on the fly when you're mid-sessions.

Notebook and pens

If you're still a bit old school like me, notebook and pens are a must--somewhere to quickly jot down names and contact info for the people you meet, new tools from sessions and keynotes, reading recommendations from us library folk, and general reminders to self as you pick up useful tips and tricks in quick conversations here and there. If you don't have anything you love yet, I'll share that Moleskin journals, Happy Planner notebooks (for when I want to move pages around easily), and colorful Papermate Flair pens are my go-tos for professional meetings. Bring extra pens!

Snacks, mints, and hand sanitizer

Bring some quick and easy snacks to put in your conference bag--granola or protein bars, dried fruit, a little dark chocolate--anything that will tide you over until the next meal and give you the energy boost you need between sessions. Mints (or gum) and hand sanitizer can probably sell themselves, right?

Reusable water bottle

You're going to be busy--stay hydrated! Bring that water bottle and keep up the H2O intake as you network and take in all the good info from our session presenters.

Roomy satchel or tote bag

Tuck in a bag just for conference stuff: something to hold that laptop, notebook, pens, snacks, and any other small items you might be picking up from vendors and networking. Comfortable to carry and dedicated solely to conference life would be my advice.

Business card / QR codes with contact information

As you network and meet people, a quick card with your contact information is easy to pass along after a great conversation. We're so often islands in our roles, but connecting to other islands is part of what makes this conference so valuable. Plan to keep up those connections after conference!

Printed copy of the conference schedule

Absolutely your preference on this one, but I always print and mark up a copy the day before arriving to plan ahead. Use it as a guide and tweak as needed using the electronic version, and it's a nice fail-safe if your internet connection struggles right when you need to remember where you're heading next.

Your administrators and fellow educators and librarian PLN can also benefit from your time at conference:

One important aspect of attending professional development is to bring back to your school and share, apply, and reflect upon what you learned with others. As we prepare for our upcoming OELMA conference, I wanted to share some tips that I have learned over the years after every OELMA conference that may be beneficial for you and also help “make your case” with administrators in future years to attend.

Take notes on every session you attend at conference in a running Google Doc. They can be as simple or detailed as you wish. You can include links, “aha” moments or phrases, book titles, and more. This also comes in handy in the future when you recall something that was shared at conference and want to re-share it, but may not be exactly sure what it was. All of the links and information are stored in one doc for future access.
As you attend the sessions at conference, if you think of a fellow educator or librarian that should know about what you are learning about, email them and share with them the content! We are always better together when we learn together! Tweet out your takeaways, share pictures, and tag your PLN that would benefit from what you are learning. Use the #OELMA22 for tagging within your social media posts!
Email your administrators right after conference about what you learned. When you get back home from conference, send a quick email to my administrators with a short recap of conference and to share what you really enjoyed about the sessions, authors, and networking. Try to focus it on things we are doing within the school as well so it ties in neatly. Thank them for allowing me to attend too.
Share with your fellow staff everything you can all year long! Whether it is in email, face-to-face, newsletters, or bits and pieces as the year goes on, I share those topics, books, websites, etc. that I learned about at conference.
Tech Tip: The free Google Keep app on your cell phone is a great app to store pictures, screenshots, lists, links, and more if you are looking for an easy conference app for your phones. You can even share items with others within Google Keep.

Networking: How to Link Up At Conference

The OELMA Conference is a great time to connect with other librarians and professionals in related fields. Here are some tips to help you make the most of networking at conference.

Think about what your professional goals and what you are hoping to get out of any new professional relationships. Are you looking for someone with a rockstar makerspace? Are you seeking to get more involved with OELMA? Searching for fellow YA book aficionados? Focusing on your needs will help you choose the right sessions and booths to visit. Share your goals and you may meet someone who can point you in the right direction, as well.
Go to all the things! Attend sessions related to your goals so that you will be in the audience with others who are curious about the same things you are. Connections can also be made in the lobby and corridors, so get out there, eyes up, phone stowed. Keynotes and large events can really mix up the crowd, so introduce yourself to the people in your area and find out what brought them there. You never know who you will run into!
Ready your introduction. Be sure you tell people you meet your full name and where you’re from, and/or your position. Someone may not remember Brasfield, but they may remember the librarian from Findlay, which is enough to find me with Google. Wearing your badge is a great way to give people a visual of your name.
Utilize the conference hashtag, #OELMA22, before, during, and after the conference.

Before: Share what you’re looking forward to, session you want to see, or specific people you are hoping to learn from. Don’t forget to tag those you mention!
During: Share what you learn in sessions, tag new people you meet, share photos you took. This creates a shared record of conference, and it can also serve as notes for your own reference.
After: Tag and thank your administrator or district for letting you come to conference. Follow up with folks you planned to stay in touch with. Use the hashtag to share photos when you implement something you learned at conference.

5. Bring business cards or a QR code

Folks can scan to connect with you on social media. Be sure to jot down a note on the back of any cards you collect to document what you talked about or if you connected digitally, be sure to follow back! You can also write directly on handouts or utilize a doc or Google Keep note. Be ready to give and receive information.

6. Not everything is going to be a match. Conference is an active and dynamic space, but not every connection you make is going to be fruitful. Cast a wide net. Also, some folks may not want to connect at the moment you encounter them, and that’s ok too. You can move along to someone who is ready to talk shop at that moment.

Hint:

It’s ok to excuse yourself too! If a conversation isn’t manifesting into what you need or you are trying to catch someone else, just be polite. You can thank the person for their time and move along to your next connection.

7. Reciprocate. You are coming to conference with your own set of skills and interents. Remember that others may be seeking to learn from you, so think about what has gone well for you or where you shine and be ready to share. If you are completely new to the profession or still in school? Don’t undervalue your fresh perspective or the questions you raise.

Every year at conference we welcome those that are attending an OELMA Conference for the first time in a unique way. We hold an introductory first-time attendee session for those that have never attended an OELMA conference before. This session is offered bright and early during this year's conference on Thursday, October 6th from 7:30 am-8:30 am in the Frantz room this year! We will offer tips, advice, and answer any questions regarding anything conference related, including graduate credit information and more. This is a great way for new attendees to also meet fellow OELMA members and start networking! If it isn’t your first time attending, you are still welcomed to attend and meet our new attendees and also maybe learn one or two new things regarding our OELMA conference this year.

OELMA and Kent State's iSchool Educates and Enlightens with our Freedom to Read Forum

On Wednesday, June 22, OELMA collaborated with Kent State University’s School of Information to host our Freedom to Read Forum. The day included two keynote presenters, a panel discussion regarding a recent book banning attempt in Ohio, and four other informative session presentations. We were fortunate enough to have 32 registered attendees, a few of them joining us virtually. The day was organized under the power-duo leadership of Kris Konik, OELMA Director of Teaching and Learning, and Dr. Meghan Harper, Director of the Kent State School of Information. Presenters included Professor Mary Anne Nichols, Dr. Chic Canfora, Dr. Belinda Boon, Liz Deskins and Dr. Christina Dorr. Scholarships were awarded to several current Kent State Students and Graduates to attend as well and were funded by Kent State’s School of Information.

OELMA also "took over" the AASL Instagram account for the day to showcase this event on national social media and our very own Amanda Brasfield, Director of Communications, posted the entire day's events via images and video clips on the AASL Instagram account--super exciting!

The day’s events discussed a variety of topics related to the freedom to read and book censorship. Important points were mentioned by each presenter and collaborative notes were taken by attendees to refer to for the future. Topics included what to include in a material selection and collection development policy, as well as suggested procedures for when a book is challenged within a school district. There was also information shared about self-censoring, bias, and recommendations for book titles that focus on student issues and topics that reflect our students' own lived experiences.

There was some discussion about possibly making this an "annual" Summer event, so stay tuned for more information!

OELMA Honors Professor Ross J. Todd by Renaming the OELMA Collaborative School Library Award to the OELMA/Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award

The OELMA Board of Directors at its May meeting, approved the renaming of the OELMA Collaborative School Library Award to the OELMA/Ross J. Todd Collaborative School Library Award in memory of Dr. Ross J. Todd. Todd, at the time of his death, was an Associate Professor of Library and Information Science (LIS) at the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers University (N.J.). He was a world-renowned expert on adolescent information seeking and use, inquiry learning in digital information environments, and the transformative role of school libraries in the 21st century.

For those of us in Ohio, Professor Todd held a special place. As OELMA Past President Gayle Geitgey shared in a recent email “He always held OELMA and Ohio school libraries near and dear.” Todd and Carol Kuhlthau founded the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries (CISSL) at Rutgers. CISSL researchers conducted three large studies in Delaware, Ohio, and New Jersey. “Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries” was the largest qualitative study of school libraries. SLJ called it “the first comprehensive study based on students’ evaluation of their media centers.” In 2003 and 2004, Todd and his co-author, SC&I Distinguished Professor Emerita Carol Kuhlthau, received a “Certificate of Appreciation for Notable Service and Significant Service to Ohio’s School Libraries” from OELMA for their leading-edge study. The article written by Ross and Kuhlthau was titled “13,000 Students of Ohio Tell Their Story” ‘Yeah, the School Library Rocks.”

Beyond the ground-breaking study, I remember the evidence-based practice workshops he conducted with Ohio school librarians. Todd and co-facilitators Gayle Geitgey and Ann Tepe helped those of us who attended the workshops to understand the significance of collecting data as evidence of our daily practice and how it affected our students and us as information specialists. I left those workshops feeling rejuvenated and eager to practice what we had learned.

During his lifetime, Todd “was deeply committed to information literacy and inquiry-based learning, application of evidence-based practice to the profession of school librarianship, and the promotion of research in the school library field. He wrote that his research had three interrelated foci: understanding how children learn and build new knowledge from information, information utilization for learning, and evidence-based practice for school libraries.”

The Collaborate School Library Award recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and the school community through joint planning of a program, project, or event in support of the curriculum, using school library resources and incorporating the Ohio Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021). Helping students learn and build new knowledge from the information they acquire using school library resources in joint planning with another educator in the school community is a fitting way to celebrate Professor Todd and his life’s work.

Inquiry Stations: Another Reason for Students to Visit the Library

WHAT IS AN INQUIRY STATION?

An Inquiry Station in my library is a place where students can investigate an item on display and respond to a quick challenge about it. The item or topic on display can be anything that your students would find engaging and about which they can make educated guesses.

I chose to call it an Inquiry Station because Woodbury Elementary is an International Baccalaureate School and “inquiry” is a foundational aspect of the IB learning cycle. However, you could call it a “Discovery Spot” or whatever catchy name fits your school community.

Here is an example of an Inquiry Station with a display of different bird skulls and a handout showing different types of food sources for birds. The challenge called for students to match which food source they thought would be consumed by which bird.

Why Have An Inquiry Station?

I want the library to be an inviting space for everyone, which means hosting activities that go beyond reading. An Inquiry Station gives students another reason to enjoy visiting the library and to have something fun (and subtly educational) to do when they are there.

It also could reinforce learning units, skills, or themes in your school by creating Inquiry Station activities that align with learning initiatives in your building.

How Do I Create an Inquiry Station?

My best piece of advice is to use what you already have access to, you don’t have to buy anything to set up an inquiry station. Imagination is your best resource, there is no need to spend much time or energy to create one that students will love.

The components are simple:

Signage to draw attention to the Inquiry Station
The object or activity to display
A posted challenge about the display
A way for students to respond to the challenge

I am fortunate to have access to dioramas from a lending library at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. These displays are visually engaging and easily allow for inquiry. The dioramas I’ve used have included animal skeletons, fossils, animals that use camouflage, etc. When I use these for Inquiry Stations, both students and staff are drawn to them right away. These have allowed for challenges such as:

What animals use camouflage and what for?
What animal does this skeleton belong to?
What are the impacts of invasive species on an ecosystem?

You may find that you are able to borrow interesting items and artifacts from area museums, historical societies or science centers.

You also can find Inquiry Station items almost everywhere. One day when I was delivering an old overhead projector to a teacher, a student in the hallway asked me if it was a 3D printer. I immediately realized that old technology would make great inquiry subjects.

I currently have a Walkman on display, but just imagine the guesses you could receive for some of that old equipment gathering dust in the back rooms!

Obviously the subjects of your Inquiry Stations will vary with age, the examples I’m sharing are for the upper elementary students that I serve. Here are some more ideas to show that you really could use anything for an inquiry station:

Unique tools or kitchen gadgets: Students make up a name and guess what the object is used for
A computer with a Nature Cam playing: Students could provide notes or guesses about the animal’s habitat, behavior, etc
A piece of origami in progress: Students have to guess what the final piece will be
Display only a small portion of a picture of a common object: Students have to guess what the object is
A photo of a historical event: Students could guess the time period, place, or actions related to the picture
Displaying an image of a work of art: Students could guess on a variety of aspects of the art: what the theme is, what materials it’s composed of, what time period it was created

Sometimes I like to pick a display where students can use books from the library to inform their guesses. If your students have devices, you could also guide them to your databases or other reliable websites to reinforce research strategies.

I usually have students respond on paper, because my library schedule requires that they interact with the Inquiry Stations in between other tasks. However, if you were using it as a class activity, you could use QR codes, Google Forms, etc., for students to respond to the challenge.

When Do Students Visit the Inquiry Station?

My library works on a flexible schedule, so students can visit the Inquiry Station anytime they have permission to be in the library. If they are here with their class, they can interact with it when there is free time before the period ends.

I usually put my station where students can complete it while they are waiting in line to check out books. You may want to do the opposite and place it somewhere else in the library to relieve congestion.

I know many elementary librarians on fixed schedules use stations that students rotate through during class, Inquiry Stations are a perfect fit for that.

Depending on your school community, you of course may need to establish rules for when students can complete an Inquiry Station challenge (after checking out, after completing work, etc.).

You know your students best and that’s what should drive what your inquiry stations are like and how they function as a part of your library.

What Do Students Get for Using the Inquiry Station?

It is up to you whether students simply experience the Inquiry Station or if you provide an award. Our District sometimes receives gift books from publishers, so I use these as rewards when available.

Most times I gather all the responses that showed any true effort (whether the answer is correct or not) and randomly pick a few winners from those responses.

Other ideas for Inquiry Station rewards could include: special bookmarks, passes for special library access (lunch in the library, Makerspace), names read on announcements, pictures of winners posted in the library, etc.

Just like with Inquiry Station ideas, if you wish to provide an award, I recommend imagination over spending money.

I also email teachers and administrators when students win so they are further encouraged and this also helps to make teachers and administrators aware that these activities are going on in the library.

If you think an Inquiry Station might be a good fit in your library, have fun with it and start small, it will evolve over time.

Your Library by the Numbers

Advocating for your library has never been more important. Through numbers you can share the value of your library, sending a powerful message to your audience. However, just sharing the numbers without context can be confusing. As Len Bryan (2020) states in Data Informed Library Advocacy from #AASL19, "library numbers and statistics are pretty meaningless to anyone else unless they are connected to your school and/or district priorities."

Start your data journey by beginning with your school district's goals, beliefs, or commitments. Does your school district have a Continuous Improvement Plan? How does your library support the goals to increase student outcomes?

Look at these areas of your library to determine how they align with district's goals:

New and continuing library programs
Collaboration
Technology
Budget

In the eBook, Say It With Data: A Concise Guide to Making Your Case and Getting Results, Dando (2014) states that "positive, proactive communication through evidence-based advocacy is a necessity for successful library programs."

Types of Data and Where to Find It

Sharing your library's story through numbers is important. Counting and keeping track of the day-to-day operations in your library is a great place to start. If you don't already, begin keeping track of the number of technology items that you manage, the number of students who use the library space, and how many times you helped a student find that just right book. This can be done with a notebook that you keep at the circulation desk, or you can make a digital form, such as Google Forms to keep track of library activities and usage.

Circulation and Catalog Reports

If you are automated through INFOhio's library services platform you should be receiving your library's usage data on the 1st of every month through your school email. These usage reports provide you with the number of check-ins and check-outs. Reporting the number of check-ins and check-outs is a simple number that not only tells the number of books that circulated through your library, but the number of library students and staff that used your library resources. If you are not receiving these reports, contact your INFOhio ITC provider to be added to these emails. Here is an example of a report on Circulation Transactions from September 2019.

In addition, review the reports in the Report Favorites section of the WorkFlows Handbook. In particular, focus on the Promote Library and Statistics sections reports such as:

High Activity Items - This report provides titles that circulated the most.
New Titles Added to the Collection - This report provides information on the new titles that were purchased for a set time period.
Value of Collection Report - This report provides a dollar amount of what your current library collection is worth.

Digital Resource Use Data

INFOhio is able to share use data for ISearch (if your school is automated with INFOhio) and for many digital resources. Details about which resources are available can be found on the INFOhio Resource Use Data page. This page has been created and updated to make it easier to find each school district or building’s usage of digital resources.

Follow these steps to fill in the search fields appropriately:

Choose a digital resource from the drop-down menu.
Fill in the date range.
Click Additional Selection Options and type your county name and choose your ITC.

Sharing Your Library by the Numbers

As the AASL Toolkit for Promoting School Library Programs says, “When it comes to getting your message across, how you share information can be as important as what you say” (p. 25). Sharing your usage data can be completed in eye-catching, engaging ways in the form of infographics, visual reports, and promotion on social media.

Once you have the statistics and data collected, spend some time reviewing and understanding your data. Put your data in an infographic to give your audience a clearer picture of your library numbers. Check out some of the free infographic creation tools like Canva, Easel.ly, and Piktochart.

Then share with your administrators, school district, and community how the numbers tell a story about the impact of your library on the community of learners in your school district.

Also, promote awareness by sharing on social media. The OELMA Communications team recently developed a fill-in-the-blank document that can be used to advocate for your library on social media. Similar to Mad Libs, those silly, laugh-out-loud, fill-in-the-blank word games, in this Library Libs version simply, fill in the blanks with your facts and figures and share these pre-created posts to your social media accounts with your administration and staff. Adding a picture or infographic will help draw attention to your post.

Librarian Mashup: Celebrating Librarians and Libraries in Song

Welcome to Week 4 of Award Season.

This week we celebrate the Grammys - sort of.

As a school librarian, have you ever “Googled” movies that feature libraries or librarians? Google returned over 13 million hits in .73 seconds. Dozens of movies such as The Music Man, ThePagemaster, The Breakfast Club, Beauty and the Beast, Clue, Party Girl, Storm Center to mention just a few appeared on my list. Some interesting articles such as “The Ten Best Librarians on Screen,” “5 Movies Featuring Reel Black Librarians in Major Roles,” appeared too. Many of these movies have soundtracks. And so in honor of the Grammys I compiled a playlist entitled Librarian Mashup in Spotify to celebrate School Library Month and our fourth week of OELMA Award Season.

This week we feature two awards:

OELMA Leadership-in-Action Award

The OELMA Leadership-in-Action Award recognizes an Ohio school library media specialist who pursues active leadership roles in their school district, in OELMA, and/or in national professional organizations (e.g. AASL, ALA). This Award honors OELMA members who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to leadership in the school library profession.. Multiple recipients may receive this award.

OELMA/Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award

The OELMA/Follett School Solutions Outstanding School Librarian Award recognizes a licensed Ohio school library media specialist who has developed an exemplary school library program. The school library media specialist must incorporate through their daily practice Ohio’s Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021) strands: equity, literacies, partnerships, and quality schools. The recipient also receives a $150 stipend from Follett School Solutions.

In 2021, OELMA celebrated Kelly Silwani as the OELMA/Follett School Solutions Ooutstanding School Librarian and Rob Kaminski and Janie Kantner as the Leadership-in-Action Award recipients. The graphics this week feature the three award recipients and focus on what receiving the awards meant to them: Acknowledgement, Dedication, Leaders, Mentors, Humbling, Keep Fighting the Good Fight, Hard Work, Credential, Empowering, Energizing, and Confidence.

Writing the narrative is an opportunity to reflect on your practice in 500 words.

READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens: Celebrating Our K-12 Students

As school library media specialists we cherish our readers, don’t we? The ones who love science fiction, the ones who have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the third time, the ones who cannot wait to tell you about the Children of Blood and Bone.

Now it’s your turn to recognize these enthusiastic readers by nominating them for the READ On! Ohio Award for Children & Teens. Created in 2015, this award recognizes Ohio K-12 students who are enthusiastic readers and enjoy being in the school and/or public library using the many services available. To assist you with promotion, the OELMA Awards Committee created a resource folder that includes a flyer, press release, directions, and graphics available here. Please note that there are two folders - one for public library staff and one for school librarians. This is the first year we have opened up nominations to public library staff, so you may want to confer with your public library children and teen services librarians.

Think about the students who visit the library - don’t they meet at least two of the criteria listed below?

Demonstrates an enthusiasm for reading
Exhibits an enthusiasm for sharing books with others
Uses books for a variety of purposes
Reads independently on a voluntary basis
Uses the school and/or public library frequently

The applications are reviewed by the OELMA Awards Committee and up to sixteen recipients are selected according to grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and region (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest). See the list of READ On! Counties by region.

Each recipient receives a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card, thanks to an anonymous donor, and a commemorative certificate. Recipients are encouraged to attend the OELMA annual conference in October to be publicly recognized. Using the website, listserv, and social media, OELMA announces the recipient’s names in May. In addition, each recipient’s school's public information officer will be notified through a press release.

OELMA Awards Season is Here!

The OELMA awards and scholarship season kicks off on Tuesday, March 15. Nominating yourself or another OELMA member for an award leads to many rewards beyond the award itself. Let’s take a look at some of our 2021 award recipients and see what they have to say.

Grace Hammond, recipient of the OELMA Collaborative School Library Award, shared that “I had a community of support. It was also a great piece of advocacy for the media center at my school because it was a way to share that what is happening in the media center is dynamic, innovating, and contemporary. It led to increased support for my program and more connections with other librarians, and I could not appreciate it more.”

Talk about building powerful connections!

Angie Jameson, recipient of the OELMA Collaborative School Library Award, explained that “sharing the recognition with the teachers and administrators who were willing to take risks with me in the 2020-2021 school year highlighted the nature of the library media specialist job in the current educational landscape. It's so important for librarians to help teachers understand how the job has changed and what services we offer, and this award gave me the spotlight to share all the wonderful opportunities our teachers have beyond book selection and promotion. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to involve my administrators in the process of the award, allowing them the chance to understand the scope of updated library standards and skills we need the time to hone and continuously improve upon.”

Two features that the Awards Committee worked diligently to streamline include new checklists and applications. The checklists replace the rubrics. As you review the checklists, note that each checklist (except for the OELMA Literacy Leader Award) is based on the Ohio Library Guidelines for Librarians (2021). For the application process, there is a Part A for the nominator and a Part B for the nominee. As the nominator, be sure and notify the person you have nominated to complete Part B, including attachments. If you are self-nominating, all you need to do is complete Part B, including attachments.

Top 5 Reasons to Present at Our OELMA Conference

I’ve been presenting at OELMA conferences for more than 30 years; it doesn’t matter how many times I present, or what my subject matter is, presenting is always a positive and invigorating experience. I've presented on reading programming, literary initiatives, the art of reading, book clubs, Harry Potter extravaganza, collaborative projects, an author of the month program, literary cake decorating contests, connecting with Middle School students, reading festivals, and schoolwide reading celebrations. I love to share ideas, but more importantly, I love to get ideas from so many extraordinary librarians from around Ohio -- librarians like YOU.

Why should YOU consider submitting a proposal to present at Conference?

Here are my Top Five Reasons to present at OELMA:

Individual Professional Development Plans: On the most practical level, presenting is a surefire way to add to your IPDP. Educators across Ohio are required to maintain an individual professional development consisting of coursework, CEUs, or “equivalent activities.” Presenting at a state-level conference is typically considered an equivalent activity according to Ohio Department of Education guidelines, and can be added to an IPDP. You get credit for attending and presenting at the same conference. Bonus!
Fine tuning your own teaching: As you are planning your session, deciding what you will share with your attendees, you think carefully about what you are doing as an educator. It forces you to consider what you are teaching, how you are interacting with colleagues and students, and the ways in which you will present your material at the conference. Though you are sharing a stellar aspect of your teaching, you also continue to improve your own work as a teacher-librarian. We all wish for our students to be lifelong learners and leaders; presenting at Conference models that kind of learning and leadership.
Engagement with the Conference: As a presenter, you feel an added sense of engagement with the entire conference which only serves to ameliorate your entire experience. Research tells us that when students are engaged in multiple aspects of school (clubs, athletics, drama, service, etc., ), they feel more connected to their overall school experience. Being a presenter at an OELMA conference mirrors that same sort of experience; you feel a connection to the overall conference. Plus -- you never have to worry about finding a seat at your session: you ARE the front row.
Self Advocacy: We all know how fabulous and necessary school librarians are; alas, not everyone in our school communities recognizes this fact. We also know the painful statistics of school librarians experiencing unprecedented loss of jobs. Though presenting a conference can’t guarantee anyone’s job, making sure that you are engaged and active in statewide conferences -- not only as an attendee but as a presenter -- is yet another way to let your administrators know that you are a valid, contributing member of the larger educational community. We know you’re amazing; presenting at Conference is another way to highlight your library program and YOU.
Networking : Every time I present, I meet new people. People ask questions after the session, or stop you in the hallways to talk about the ideas you’ve shared, or email you after the conference to continue the conversation. Each conversation or question is a stepping stone to another idea-exchange, partnership, collaboration, or friendship. Friendships and connections aren’t included in the cost of the conference, but they really are an unexpected and priceless benefit.

A Right-to-Read Playbook

With the current “trend” nationwide toward school library book banning, some days it feels like we’re in some darker version of the 1984 movie, Footloose. With that said, we’ve never been in a better place to combat the ever-looming attempt of censorship regardless of how massive the effort is to create barriers of access.

Below are a few resources that our school library department has relied heavily on to combat censorship in the past six months.

A Little Background

In September, our department fielded challenges on Gender Queer and Lawn Boy (both Alex Award winners). After an investigation about whether board policy was followed in purchasing these materials and having administration and a committee discuss the titles, we're currently looking at being one of the few districts in the state to keep both of them on our shelves. We've been working hard over the past years to update our collections to focus on DEI and create inclusive collections K-12 while also updating our selection policies to reflect and support that initiative. We feel that fighting these challenges is crucial to that work, and we want to make sure that we're even more prepared for the next one.

Preparation is Key

The Selection Policy

One of the most important resources we have as school librarians is the Selection Policy which speaks to “the why” for every title on our shelf. It also speaks to how library material selection is far different from classroom instructional material selection. We updated our selection policy in 2018 to include more diverse language, promote an inclusive collection and list resources we use to choose library materials. We used the ALA toolkit to assist us in the updated version and, although we still plan to revise and improve it even more, we know that having an updated policy helped in our current challenges. Add your district’s policy to this form, and gain access to one another’s policies around the state.

The Reconsideration Procedure

Along with the selection policy in place, it is worth the time and preparation to ensure your district has a challenge procedure that removes any initial layers of possible censorship. This would include an administrator being able to make the decision after an initial review like our’s does (something we hope to change in the future). Luckily, we currently have extremely supportive administrators who see the value in challenged library titles going to a committee for a larger discussion with all stakeholders rather than immediately banning a book. We hope to update this on our end in the future though as that could always change. Also, be sure to have the specific breakdown of the challenge committee that will be formed as a result of a materials challenge so there’s little confusion when beginning the important process of choosing who is a part of the committee.

ALA’s OIF

Any time we have a challenge, I immediately reach out to ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom and submit the title/s being challenged. They are an invaluable resource for support that we, as librarians, should support each year. If you don’t read anything else from this blog, read this post that they recently put out in response to the current influx of challenges around the nation.

“Although certain titles are trendy targets now, book challenges will be an issue for the long run. That’s because, ultimately, no book is the perfect fit for every reader, especially works that tackle difficult topics reflecting real-world circumstances. But one reader’s objection is not a license to restrict all other readers from the book.”

ALA reiterated that we’re far from alone in this #FReadom Fight, as our fellow Texas librarians have called it. After updating ALA on our district’s current challenges, they sent the aforementioned blog post and a letter of support to our administration and board of education members. We as the trained school librarians are the best resource to prepare our administrators in case concerns arise regarding our curated collections. The more we’re involved, the more our students will benefit. After all, having the books on our shelves is not about us. It’s about our students who need access to these titles. Let me say that again…having the books on our shelves is not about us. It’s about the students! #CheckYourBiases

One other resource I want to call to your attention, especially if you need a refresher on best practices in collection development, is INFOhio’s collection development course. It offers three hours of professional development within their Library Pathway. Our department did this together to stay current and spark great discussions about meeting the needs of our students and staff K-12.

Who knows where this national flood of attempted censorship will take us. As a department we’ve discussed the fear of the underlying effects, such as librarians being too afraid to purchase certain titles because they see them as controversial or hot topics. It is hard work but picture one student each day who needs these titles on the shelf…they’re why we do what we do. It’s not about us. It’s about them. With libraries offering voluntary choice in reading, we know that not every book is for everyone; we must build libraries for all and overcome the challenges and fear that seek to destroy inclusive collections. Hopefully, the policies you have in place will allow you to do just that!

Sketch Notes!

Presenting to others is a wonderful and fulfilling way to give back to the library community. I have been supported and encouraged over the years by the leaders of OELMA. If you are asked to present or if you have something in your wheelhouse that you would like to share, I encourage you to step up!

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to share one of my passions with other librarians. That passion is sketchnoting. Sketchnoting is a wonderful and creative way to engage students. Not only does it engage, it helps students remember facts and concepts along with being relaxing and calming. I think in these stressful times, anything we can do to help alleviate the stress is appreciated.

I simply stepped in front of my classroom of Ohio librarians and treated them as the creative group of excited students they proved to be! I had fun and they learned the foundations of sketchnoting. In the past few months, many have reached out for lesson plans and resources.

OELMA, thank you for the opportunity!.

The Year 2022: Positive Perspectives, Optimism, and Thankfulness

Last year a dear friend of mine asked if OELMA could designate 2021 as The Year of Grace: to grant others grace and forgiveness without question or judgment. I thought that was a wonderful idea and so the board viewed things all year with grace and forgiveness.

I would like to propose that in 2022 we continue to grant grace and forgiveness, but also add optimism and thankfulness. It’s so easy to get caught up in negativity, bombarding us from every angle at every opportunity. But there is much goodness in the world if we only change how we view our opportunities. Take for example the snow and ice storm we had earlier this month. Instead of thinking of all the work which could be done, I chose to watch the snow fall and appreciate the beauty in it’s reflective nature and the power it possesses depending upon when and where it occurs. I chose to be thankful that my family was home and we had enough food and supplies to last us through.

It doesn’t take much to be optimistic, just a small shift in how you view things and soon you will be counting your blessings and ignoring negativity. I think it has always been in my nature, but the first time I remember teaching optimism was when my kids were young. Sometimes they couldn’t understand why a fellow student acted a certain way or disliked someone all together. I taught them that everyone was put on this earth for a reason. You may never know the other person’s purpose, they may never really know their purpose, but everyone has something good in them. So just find it and compliment them on it, even if it’s as small as a cool pair of sneakers or a new hair color. Noticing little things makes a difference.

Looking for the positive has been rather difficult over the last few years. We have all had a lot of issues thrown at us at once, but going back to compliment my students on their sneakers or their awesome hair color is helping me return to a level of optimism which provides thankfulness and happiness. I am thankful I get to go to school everyday and see such awesome kids. I am thankful I have a profession I love and a family I can come home to every evening. I encourage you to start noticing the great little things in life. As they add up, they will become your buffer to negativity.

The Evolution of Ohio Virtual Librarians Who Read

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 15 years since the Librarians who Read book group began! The seed for the idea came after a district librarian meeting. There wasn't time for us to discuss books at the monthly meetings, but that was why we all became school librarians. So we talked, emailed, and met monthly among ourselves, sharing book titles that we discovered. We didn’t want the pressure of someone needing to clean their library (or their house) for these meetings, so we met at public places such as bookstores, libraries, and coffee shops. After a few months, we began telling other librarians from other school districts about it and it grew from a Hilliard thing to a central Ohio thing - Central Ohio Librarians Who Read. The selling point for this book group - no required book. That was too much pressure! Instead, we designed (I say that loosely because we did little designing or preparing!) it so that you could bring whatever book(s) you wanted to share, new or old, and if you were having a bad day, you just could come to learn about book titles and share the camaraderie of those who understood what you do! Over the years, more librarians would drop in; others would drop out, but we continued to meet monthly, at Panera’s community room, on a Friday afternoon. One member’s husband said, “you go to that book club and you come home stinking of hot chocolate and new ideas!” For several years, we sponsored a gift wrapping fundraiser at a local Barnes & Noble and raised money for OELMA scholarships.

Never an official OELMA book club; however, it’s been largely OELMA members who participated. Sometimes we would gain new OELMA members because of this connection. Did we only talk books? Well, you know when we gathered, “school” sometimes seeped into the conversation. We celebrated together or commiserated together when one of us shared some news. We always returned to the books.

Fast forward to 2016, when OELMA invited Susan and me to offer a “model” session of the book group at our annual conference. It was after hours and about 10 people attended eager to share book titles. Soon, other school librarians from around the state decided to start their own book groups. Karen Reiber, now retired, started a book group in southwest Ohio in the Cincinnati area.

Then came the pandemic… and we weren’t able to meet at our usual haunt, a Barnes & Noble, in Upper Arlington. It was disheartening not to chat and share stories. BUT… with the advent of Zoom we could use the power of the internet for good - a virtual book club. While virtual meet-ups are not ideal, the upside- people from around the state can join in, and they do! Initially there was some haphazard scheduling, but now we have it under control. Check out the Virtual Ohio Librarians Who Read Facebook page for dates and times (https://www.facebook.com/centralohiolibrariansread) and a link to a Google spreadsheet that lists all the book titles we’ve discussed so far. Each month we will add to the list - a book list curated by school librarians, how perfect! Follow us on Facebook.

Blind Date with a Book

I am always looking for creative ways to display books. I always find that when I put forth effort into the themes of my book displays students gravitate towards them and select titles they would not normally select from the shelves. Book displays allow me to market the great titles I have available for students and make sure that everyone sees themselves in the characters in the books that are offered to them.

Valentine’s day is around the corner and love is in the year. Each year at this time I lean on my love of books and getting books into the hands of students through a creative book display. Students look forward to my “Blind Date with a Book” book display. This is a display that takes a bit longer to set up but totally worth the time because these books get swooped up. Students usually comment on how cute this display is and grab a title or two because they are curious about which books are included. I have two rules with this display. The first rule is they can’t open it until they leave the library. The second rule is they have to at least give the book a try and if they don’t like it they certainly can return it but they still have to tell me why they didn’t like it.

This year our GSA club asked for a LGBTQ display and I’m combining the two. I did a simple search in the catalog for titles that have characters who identify with the LGBTQ community and love stories. In years past I have grabbed titles that feature characters going through a struggle and pulled out details about the characters to help pull students into checking these books out. I grab the barcode numbers off of each of them and then wrap the books in a Valentine themed paper (Usually red with some hearts drawn on it). On the front I write a few details about the main character but do not give away the title of the book. Students will then have to pick the title based off of the details I give them, similar to a blind date. I write the barcode number on the back of the book so I can check it out to the student. Usually curiosity gets the best of them and these get swooped up quickly!

Last year when we still had so many precautions we were following for Covid I had to be creative about how I did book displays. I relied heavily on our digital tools to ensure students still had access to great content. Linked is a sample of my digital blind date with a book. For this one I kept a list in the library of which title matched up with each slide. Students were able to access this presentation through my google classroom and through a collection on Destiny.

The Power of Podcasts: School Librarians United with Amy Hermon

One of my favorite things to do (personally and professionally) is to listen to podcasts while driving, cleaning, walking, or just about anything that does not require too much multi-tasking. As we unveil our new website, oelma,org, I decided it was a good time to showcase and profile a few podcasts that I listen to that have made a difference in my life. This is the first blog part of The OELMA Blog: Power of Podcast series.

The first one I wanted to profile is School Librarians United with Amy Hermon. Amy is a fellow school librarian from our next door neighbor state of Michigan and she is just a JOY to listen to and learn with. She has been regularly creating this podcast for four years now and I am quite obsessed about all things School Librarians United! This podcast is one for US...school librarians. She features topics we NEED to learn more about no matter where you are and what you do. Her guests are from all over the world and each one offers fresh perspectives, great ideas, and truth we need to hear about the work we do. I have listened to her for a few years, through the pandemic, and I cannot say enough positive things about the energy, passion, and real-life tools she shares through this podcast. Some of her recent topics include, finding joy, author visits, culturally responsive libraries, role as edtech specialist, and so many more. She also started a series recently called "Can I Just Vent?" which includes school librarians venting about things we can all relate to in some form or another. This episode was one that I NEEDED to have in my life and I cannot wait to hear more!

Happy New Year!

To kick off 2022, we thought it would be a great time to unveil our new OELMA website! We are excited to share our new platform, Wild Apricot, with you.
